I'm looking for a replacement factory cd/tape player for and '02 camry. What models match this one? '01-'04 will all fit right?

Only '02-up, '01 will not. Or an aftermarket HU, a kit, and harness adapter.

OK i called the dealership about the anti-theft code and they said i need the vin# of the car the new player came out of and the the model# and faceplate #. The faceplate and model # will be on the unit right? And i have to have them do this right? They want $35 and that seems a bit steep.

if i buytoyota unit cd/tape player or whatever combo nation, the actual cd player in there is the same right from like '00 up? i ask because only the cd plater is messed up and i remember i could take the player out of all the hardware and there was just a small thin cable connecting it. Does anyone now if this cable pops out? i can't remember. Its my friend's car so i don't have access. If i just swapped the cd players from the two units i wouldn't need the anti-theft code right? That has to do with the computer in the unit
So basically 3 ?s would the cd out of the unit from '00 up fit right with and '02? Does the cable connecting the player to the rest of the unit pop out or do i need to splice? and would i then need the anititheft code?

Can't your friend just take the car back to the dealer and have the radio replaced under warranty? That's what the 3-yr/36k-miles is for, unless the car has over 36k miles already.

There's no guarantee that the laser pickup unit from the previous generation will fit into the current generation. You will have to detach the ribbon cable and probably some small plugs. OEM cd players were never built that well in the first place.

If the anti-theft code is activated, any time when power is cut to the headunit, you will need that code next time to use it again, irregardless whether you swap the laser pickup or not.

If it was my car i would just get an aftermarket cd player, but it's his wifes car and she doesn't want to give up the tape player part and they both kinda wanna keep the car stock. I assume its past the warranty but i'll check. Do you know if the ribbon cable just pops out? and I should be able to get the theft code for less than $35 right?

Well, check with the warranty first. Your friend may luck out in that it's still under warranty.

For the ribbon cable, there is usually a clip holding it in the socket, so you'll have to unclip it from both sides GENTLY. The clip doesn't need to be completely removed for the ribbon cable to be released, but just enough.

If the radio needs to come out, just note the serial number down and the anti-theft code can be retrieved from the dealer; $35 doesn't seem too bad.
