I really like my compustar. Range is good and the paging feature is handy -- lets me know when someone's messin' with my car.

Only real downside is I go through one AA battery each month for the pager... and when the battery is almost dead, the range goes down to almost zero. Of course, I can't really complain cause the rest of the time I can unlock/disarm the car from like two football fields away.

I have the APS 996A/Prestige Remote Start. It costs a lot less than the comparable Viper and has the same features. The remote range definately varies with your surroundings. I can check the interior temp. and use the remote start from my 2nd floor office window even when the car is about 300 ft away. I sometimes can't do that within 50 feet inside some parking garages. I got mine off Ebay and had it installed professionally at a local stereo shop. Just remember with whatever brand you end up with...,the most important factor is the quality of the install. You can pay for the most expensive model but it won't work as good as a cheap one if it isn't installed properly.

I have the Matrix 3.5 and love it, but they are coming out with a new one soon that blows everything out off the water. Has remote start, two way communication, pager remote, and a lot of other stuff I can't remeber. I have great range and love the extra options. Mine can open/close and crack the front windows and the back windows independantly of each other. And when u leave your windows open and get out of your car, the alarm will close them for you. Fun little extras..

I know this won't be helpful to you, but I have just the stock security system with one additional add-on: an electrified steering wheel lock. It's called an AutoTaser (and sorry it's been discontinued so I don't know where you can get one anymore). You basically angle it in front of the stereo so that people can't reach it.

I have a video clip of it in action in my Sequoia on this page:
