Power surge to Subs on start?

My buddy put in a new Alpine deck, subs and amp and whenever the deck turns on, there is a surge to the subs that cause a single thump. Any ideas why this would be happening?

My own does this when my car is turned on and off, might be that my gain is turned up to high(all the way up)

I had the gain down.. but still same problem :P

most likely you amp does not have a delay, on it, you can hook up a relay to delay the amp to turn on, so you dont get that thump.
