Not too sure about telling whether your speakers are good or not. Maybe if it starts to sound like theres cracking.

As for the head unit, it really doesn't matter what head unit you have if you want quality speakers.

I don't know what other speakers to recommend because all i've ever owned were my 4way pioneers. Maybe some other people here on TN might be able to help you with that.

What kind of budget are we talking here. Don't buy Sony, they're crap. I would suggest Pioneer, Alpine or Eclipse. As for speakers, well depends if you want coaxial, or components.

well, the unit that is Sony is what he has right now. I don't know what kind of companies you like, but it's totally up to you. Mostly any unit will work with all the available speakers in the market.

As for speakers, go with something like Pioneer, Kenwood, JL, Alpine, etc... There's so many out there for you to choose.

There is a BIG difference in how your speakers are going to sound. A shitty head unit will make your 500 dollar speakers sound like crap, and a good head unit will make your stock speakers sound like good aftermarket ones. I'm not saying that speakers dont matter...they probably do make the biggest difference in clarity and sound, but it all starts with the headunit. Music can only be played as clear and clean as the head unit can convert and amplify the signals.

Your problem with the softening speakers could be caused by either the headunit or the speaker. Cant think of a way to tell which one it is. If it sounds scratchy, its probably your speakers...the foam around speaker cone might be broken.
