Well, I've decided 3-way components would be too pricey so I decided on sort of making my own 3-way system. What do you guys recommend for 4" components. I'm trying to keep the price under $200 but willing to go a little over. I think I'm pretty set on getting the 6.5" Image Dynamic midbass drivers for the doors.

MB Quart makes some nice component sets and they have a few 4 inchers. I've ran a set of 6.5"s, but to be honest I've never heard their 4" or any of these listed below.
CDT also carries numerous 4" sets.
I think Soundstream has the Exact series which go for around $225 and I believe they offer a 4" set.
I'm not too sure what Focal sells in the 4" line.
Good Luck.
I'm pretty sure Infinity, JL and Eclipse don't offer 4" sets off the top of my head.

Took a look at the Soundstream Extreme series (Exacts are coaxial), they certainly are interesting. They have horn loaded tweeters. Also, they run at 3 ohms, but I think that should be fine since my amp is 2 ohms stable. I'll try to do some more research on these.
Focal and CDT speakers are just too deep for me. If Infinity offered 4" Perfects I wouldn't even have to make a decision. I guess I'll take a look at MB Quart, even though they're well known for their harsh tweeters. But then again, the Perfect tweeters don't bother me now.

Listen to the Boston Acoustics Pro 4.5 (not sure if it's available), but that line of speakers from them are pretty good. Don't think you want to spend money on the Z series. I believe there is a Rally 4" components also, cheaper, of course. For the 6.5 IM drivers, you may want to filter those using a bandpass configuration, then let the sub(s) do the rest.
Thanks for the advice, I'll check them out. I'm going to set an HPF on the IDs at 60 Hz, and will set a LPF on them at about 400 Hz if possible. When I add subs, I want them to play from 20 Hz to 60 Hz. I'll probably get the variable Q Infinity Perfect subs since I can get them for cheap.

I dont quite get how youre doing the crossovers without a 3-way crossover.
And for the speakers, I would try to keep it matched as much as possible. Different brands of speakers have different types of sound. Some brands/models sound duller or higher than others.
It would be nice to have a 3-way bi-amped crossover, but it's not necessary. For the midbass driver, the 2 channels on the amp would do the filtering. Brand coherence isn't a requirement at all, you can mix/match anything.
Hey JaJay or Luc, have you guys heard the JL components? 3-ways in particular? Their price isn't too bad and will fit my budget. My primary concern with them is how deep the speakers are.

Never heard JLs in a car. I've heard quite a few sets on a wall. I don't remember model numbers or how exactly they sounded. I do remember thinking they were clean, but a bit overpriced like most of the JL line. I don't know how much power they were receiving, but I did like the sound even though I can't remember exaclty what they sounded like. I remember hearing full sound with a less dominant tweeter on all models. They all had the same sound type (if I remember correctly), but the higher end models had a better clarity. And come to think of it I haven't heard any of their three way systems, only 2 way. Sorry I couldn't be of much use to you. I tend to pay more attention to JL amps and subs than their speakers.
Yes, I've heard the JL 3-way components, the 850CSi or something. That has been discontinued, unless there's a new 3-way set out that I'm not aware of. I don't think you'll have a problem with the depth on the "bass" driver, and they definitely give a more prominent presence overall. Of course, channel separation is pretty good.
The JL always had an in-between sound reproduction between neutral and harsh, so they don't sound flat or screeching. I tend to more of the neutral side, a flatter response on the frequency spectrum. But overall, the JL speaker systems, whether coaxial or component speakers have always sounded well to me.
The model is the XR653-CS. They're from the XR line. I think the ZR line is better but they don't have any 3-way systems in there. Someone on another forum told me the depths were ~2.5" and ~2.25"

Well, a little update.... "won" the Boston Acoustics Proseries 3-ways for $305+~$30 for shipping. So that's what I'm getting and I don't think I'll be dissappointed (cant spell right now). Not a bad price if I say so myself, since I saw a Buy It Now for them for $525.
