this is where i got my subs/amps- www.coustic.com cost me around close to 600$ for a 2-10's Coustic CF1044 and the 1200DB amp... coustic's are a very nice sound system...but like i said there are many different good audio systems out there...
check for local sales. A friend of mine picked up a JL 12 W3 in a box and a JL 200 monoblock amp for 300 bucks. It hits pretty hard, especially because its in an SUV.
Well, i'd say that alpine type S subs are pretty decent for the price (2 x 12" on ebay for 140)
Hifonics 500 watt monoblock amp runs about 160 off ebay. With shipping it should come out to be around 350.
Wiring for your amp and subs will cost you around 40 bucks.
Finally, a set of JL or infinity reference components should run you about the last 150 bucks.
i agree about the use of cheap comps, if you can find some that ask for 50 watts, I think it'd be fine off the HU. Kicker compvr's are a good bargain sub IMO

Pioneer subs are pretty good. He could pretty much run a pioneer system and be satisfied. Only thing watch out for pioneer amps. There is a certain mono block that it is so hot it causes fire . So maybe a RF, JBL,Hifonics, MTX amp will do a good job.
If you want to try something at decent price try Cerwin Vega. I gave my friend 3 of them at 200 watts each and the play smooth. The new improve vega's are great smooth precise bass. You can get 3 for less then 200 bucks with 400 watts of power each.
