J. Colasanti,
I rarely ever see 18's anymore in competition, even 15's for that matter. In fact, all I ever see are 12's. Has speaker technology advanced so that 12's are the de facto size one needs for sub bass applications? Would you prefer 18's over 15's over 12's in a car audio application? I ask this because your stand out woofers fall into the 12" range (13W7/12W7/12W6v2).
The 13W7 was designed to sound equivelant to a 15" sub without sacraficing the space of a 15", that is why many people are sticking with 12" super subs these days because of their top perfomance. Look at Adire, the Parthenon is a 24" baflle that is equivelant to 18 18" subs.

this is where i hopr colasanti chimes in, when we had training just to sell W7's on thier release on to the market, we were told that it was made 13.5" because of cone control, it gives no space saving due to its large size box.

the parthenon has a 24" baffle, but it's not considered an 18 18" transducer, is it?
The point was that the 13w7 is a 13.5", not considered a 15". I am in daze as how the W7 is considered a 15", even if it's a displacement issue. it's a 13.5" woofer, so it's considered a 13.5" sub.
and yes, sadly, the 13w7 wants a chunk of it's air space too. Heck, i don't even think of puttin W7s in a small box. When i had my 10w7, never had less than 2.8 cubes of ported muscle
If you were to put a standard mounting flange around the 13W7, it would basically be a 15" woofer (about the same effective piston area). For example: 15W3 Sd= 127.5 sq.in. 13W7 Sd= 107.35 sq.in, but the 13W7 has 64% greater displacement capability and requires a smaller enclosure. There is no 15W7 because is it was felt that a DMA (Dynamic Motor Analysis) optimized 15W7 would be too large and impractical for car audio applications. As it stands the 13W7 tips the scales at 52 lbs and requires a large enclosure. The 13W6v2 excels in small enclosure performance but does not have quite the displacement capability of the 13W7 (but it's close).
