91 Camry Exec installation

G'day All.

I'd just recently purchased a new Cd player for my 91 camry. Thing is, I have no idea how to remove the old stock radio. I tried pulling out the plastic molding that covers the radio/air con part of the dash, but toi no avail. I can't see any screws either. Are there any sites out their that can help me? I tried http://www.carstereohelp.com/stereoremovalToyCamry3.htm
but it seems like the US Camrys are different? Cos I can't seem to find the screws mentioned in the guide...

Any help would be much appreciated. BTW, I want to replace the stock 4" front speakers in the dash - is it really hard to DIY or should I pay a shop to install it? Must I use another 4" or can I put a bigger one in?

Hmmm I'm not sure why your screws would be in a different spot... But there are 2 screws at the top of the molding that are in recesed holes at a 45degree angle upward, in all the gen2 Cam's I've seen.

As far as replacing your speakers, I don't think it's all that hard. Done it a couple of times, and if you are somewhat mechanicly inclined, it should be fairly easy.

So do I have to remove anything to see the screws? and they are above the A/C part of the dash?

The screws will be right above the climate control. Otherwise the rest of it is held in by clips. You will want to have your shifter in the far back position so your ash tray portion will have clearance. Also watch the connector to the 12V power plug/cig lighter.

Well, after fiddling with it more, I managed to remove the damn plastic molding - there were NO screws above the A/C console. It was all clipped on. Actually, there was one screw I needed to remove - it was located under the demister button. Funny, I think this is probably being our Aussie Camry's are homemade in Australia hence the slightly different layout??

You can mount 4" dash speakers on the Canadian Gen2, which is probably the same as an Austrailian model.

They have holes to mount 4" speakers or the speaker boxes that contained the 3.5".

I don't know about the American model, but I'll be finding out today as I install my sound system from my previous car into my new one.

I put 4 inch in the other day, was not hard, just find all the screws in the dash get some connectors for the stock wiring, it goes ok and makes it that much easier btw use the open socket bits on the speakers i had kenwood and they only just fit. you should try the passenger side first, its much easier. when i changed tuners i pulled the entire lower dash apart, it worked and wasnt that hard to re assemble, didnt have a single screw left over!

Ok, I was going to install some Pioneer 4" speakers...but I am getting different opinions left right and centre. some people say that Camry air duct's gonna be in the way since the magnet's too big. Others say it'll fit fine. Who should I believe? I don't wanna buy the speakers, open em, and find that they don't fit...

the only way to be sure is to check it for yourself. Remove the underdash section and take a look for yourself. The stock speaker i have right here and its 45mm from front to back and my kenwood 4 inchers are 42mm thick and are 90watts. The specs should be on the box, if you havent bought them check the website.

Dimensions
Mounting Depth 43mm
Dimensions 134 (diam.) x 62mm
Weight 840g per pair
Carton 323 x 75 x 152mm (WxHxD)
Carton Weight 950 g

Straight from Pioneer's site:

Mounting Depth 43mm
Dimensions 134 (diam.) x 61mm

sounds like it should fit. Hopefully they'll sound better then the stock ones.

I have another problem - I bought these Sony 6" speakers but only just found out there are no mounts in the rear (its a wagon). Where do I get speaker mounts? wreckers? is it going to be a pain to install or should I get em fitted @ a shop?

The front speakers fit inside a enclosure.

So the only way they won't fit is if their to big or to deep.

See thread for pics:

After a weekend of trying to move my sound system from my old Gen2 into the new one, I found some info that might help out some people, for what it's worth:

The US Gen2's dash pieces are totally different from the Austrailian/Canadian/Rest of the World/etc.. Gen2s. They're also a #$%&ing PITA to take apart.

The US Gen2 has those boxes for the speakers, which hold a 3.5" speaker. It has no provisions for a 4" speaker, which is dissapointing.

The rest of the Gen2s can hold that speaker housing, and some actually came with it, but they also came with cheap 4" speakers as well, which screw directly onto the dash piece.

So, to sum it up:

US Gen2: 3.5" only
Other Gen2: 3.5" with housing or 4" stand-alone.
