odd start up/ignition issue

So I got into my car today and it didn't start on my first turn of the key. I tried several times and got no response, none. noe clicking, no turning, no cranking. I tried a few more times and on the last try held the key in the start position. after maybe six seconds at start, the instrument panel started to light up(you know at start up all the symbols light up for a second) and then it cranked right up. I don't know what could have caused this. Do I need a new battery, a new ignition? any ideas?

Check your cables

It sounds like you may have a corroded wire from your battery to starter. If you've had some battery acid accumulated around your cables, it can deteriorate the wiring in your cable. It may look fine, but try cutting a half inch to an inch off and reconnect to your battery.

Canada

Not too sure if the Avalons have a main relay. I had to replace the one in my old Honda Accord. It has similar symptoms as you are describing. It seemed to happen more frequently (daily) in warm weather.

Got stuck in Ft. Lauderdale one time with that POS.

It's funny that you say this. My car did the same thing the other day, I thought it was just do to the cold. I had to try 4 times before I got it started. Not sure what the reason was, but my battery is new, and I didn't even hear the solenoid clicking either. Does anyone know if the starter solenoid is mounted in the engine electrical box, or if it's right on the starter? I have to belive this will be a reoccuring problem.
