Just replaced my stock deck with a Clarion single-din. It's pretty simple. To do it properly, you'll need a mounting kit and a wiring harness for your 99 4-Runner (available from any car audio store). Once you take off the plastic dash trim - which can be frustrating the first time you do it - just be careful and patient, take out the old deck by unscrewing the mounts and detaching the wire harnesses. Wire up your new deck to the aftermarket "toyota" wire harness before mounting, put together the mounting kit, and the rest is as simple as plugging it in, installing the new deck in the kit and dash and replacing the trim.

You can do it without the wiring harness by manually splicing, but I wouldn't recommend it!!

Spend the extra $12-$16 and get the harness makes a world or difference than cutting wires.

thanks i always run new wires for power and ground because my HU needs a 14 gauge for the Always On(its the main power lead for the internal amp)

and i am also installing new speakers with new amp so i will pretty much not run any of the original wiring.

P.S. do all of the toyotas 4runners have the tweeters where the wing window used to be? or is that some "high grade" factory stereo.

I think tweeters are usu. a premium item. If it does have tweeters than it prob. also has a factory-installed amplifier. If you were to use the existing speaker wires, you would have to disconnect it, but since you are running new wires, it wont matter anyway.

The easiest harnesses are the smart-harness. You have to buy two ends, one from the aftermarket radio to a universal end, then another which goes from a universal end to the toyota harness. Go to either BB or CC and they'll have what you need.

Ouch! yeah, I worked @ CC and they should've given you both, and explained what they did.

Soldiering gives better conductivity in the end, but as you know, it just takes longer. You can also use the soldier-less crimps, i've used them alot and they work fine. Just need to test the ends with a multimeter, so you dont get it all together and find out that you have a faulty connection.

good luck.

As far as filling in your double din hole, go to the wreckers and look for Toyotas that have a single din deck with the double din hole. Some Camrys have a nice pocket with a door, other cars have just an open pocket. Anyway, take out the radio in the car of your choice and remove the brackets. Now before you go and put it on your brackets (It should mount in the same fashion), you'll need to file off two small tabs that keep the pocket centred beneath the OEM radio. Throw it all together, and you're done.
