power ant problems on my 89
I bought this car about a month ago. The antenna was up when I went to look at the car for the first time. When you turned the key on or off you could hear the motor run. I'm not positive but it was a 700+ mile drive back to my house from where I bought the 89. I'm pretty sure the antenna was always trying to go up and down but the antenna mask stayed up all the time.
I also have an 88 that has an aftermarket Kenwood in it. I swapped the radio. The 89 had a stock AM/FM.
I cut the male and female harness from the 89 and install both side to the 88.
I then hard wired the Kenwood into the 89. I hooked the blue antenna wire from the Kenwood to the black with blue stripe wire on the 89 radio harness. I also unplugged the subwoofer under the driver's seat on the 89 and left out.
It's been a few weeks since I did the radio swap. I got some time today and I took the antenna off today. It had a borken antenna mask cable. I bought one and replaced it today and the antenna is very intermittent in the up and down movement. Sometimes it will work and sometimes it won't. Most of the time it will not work. I am getting constant power to the antenna and 12v up voltage when the radio and or key is turned on. It was getting dark on me and the antenna was stuck up. I turned the key and radio on and off several times with no luck. I then went back to the antenna and unplugged the harness that goes into the relay box. With the radio on I could hear the relay kick in and out as I unplugged and plugge the harness into the relay box.
I was doing repeatly and all the sudden the antenna mask went down. When the wiring harness made contack I saw a small spark where the harness made the connection.
So do you think I have a bad antenna relay controller. All is stock except the radio.
My guess is I do but who knows. Sometimes the antenna will be up and you turn the key off and it stays up. Then sometimes the antenna will stay up and sometime it will go part of the way down and sometimes it will go all the way down.
