speakers for 97 camry.

I'm looking to get some new speakers for my 97 Camry. I do have a BOSS HU... nothing special.. just something to listen to in the car. my front speakers (factory) has been acting up.. thats one of the main reason why I want to get a newer one. I dont know much about speakers... so i was wondering if anyone can suggest something good. not looking to spend much at all. I do have a little speaker located near the rear mirror, i guess thats call a tweeter?!! I have been looking at ebay for something cheap. dont know what's what... is my speaker size 6.5"??? and 6x9' in rear? i dont have an AMP. and dont think planning to get one.... not yet at least. help!!

btw, its my first post. just wanted to say hi to everyone... and happy to find this forum..... good to know other who drives the camry.

I'm not sure how BOSS is now, but their stuff has been on the bottom end of quality in the past. If you have the tweeters up on top in your '97, then you have the OEM premium system, which has an OEM amp behind the glovebox. But I imagine that has been bypassed with the BOSS.

The fronts are oversized 6.5", rears are 6x9". I'll repeat this again, if you want to get the best speakers that your budget can afford, go and listen to them yourselves. Let your ears do the decisions for you, not other people's influence. Once you've narrowed down to at least 2 or 3 brands from the stores, you can try your luck with eBay and see if they are available. As you know, once you get something from eBay, you'll have no warranty, unless the seller has explicitly indicated there would be.

i havent install the BOSS yet.. friend gave it to me recently because I wanted a CD player, just never got around installing it yet.

you mentioned that I might have the OEM premium system. I do have total of 6 speakers. the little tweeter is right next to the side mirror (of course on the inside of the car).... the same area where you can remove the side mirror. i'll check behide my glovebox tomorrow morning and see if I have an amp there..... how big is it?? is it easy to spot it??? too cold outside to check now.

yes, i do plannin on going to bestbuy or some audio shop and listen to some of the speakers...... just to get an idea whats out there.

thanks....

If you want your radio installed correctly, your factory amp will need to be bypassed. I believe it is located on the passenger side, right under or near the glove box. Like Luc said, let your ears lead you to the right ones. I've got a Double Din HU, and 4-way Pioneers all the way around in my '97. Good luck with your search.

This post is preetty close to my needs Although I do not have Premium system
I am looking for possibly add on tweeters for the front window panels to get the sound up where my ears are! Do Japnaese drive with there heads between their knees? Used to have pioneer Tune up speakers which were run in parallel with originals on a Volvo. Have not found anything like it recently --Suppose I shoiuld look at Crutchfield but what will fit?

The Crutchfield web site'll let you put in your car's make/model/year, and they'll tell you what fits, and what'll need a bit of adjustment. Like Luc said, we've got 6½" in the front 6"x9" in the back, so most any speaker of those dimensions should fit. Take a listen at a few audio shops to find out what your ears (and wallet) like best, then hit Ebay, Crutch, or any of the other car audio sites.

I'm getting ready to redo my system all the way around - from head unit to all speakers - and plan to go this route.

Edit: check eTronics too. I found some Rockford-Fosgate speakers that I like for front & back, and found 'em much cheaper there than on Crutchfield. Couldn't find the HU I've been considering, but there are a plethora of sites to check....

its because theyre really short. I have to open the sunroof to keep my hair from rubbing on the roof (6'5") and when I'm riding dog, i have to lean towards the center. Better cars, smaller cars. Its give and take
