Question deck install/dimmer switch, connection?

I had a deck installed and somehow it blew out the dimmer switch, the dash lights and HVAC lights are out and the dimmer popped and is visably damaged. I've ordered a new dimmer but have checked the harness that plugs into the rhetostat and am getting 12 volts from two of the three connections. This doesn't seem right. I need some input!!!! Isn't there a wire that runs from the rear of the deck to the dimmer. I about to go have it out with the installers cause that wasn't a cheap item to replace. Please help.

the dimmer is usually a orange or orange/striped wire. i really dont know why you are trying to do it yourself if you had it installed at a shop. take it back, have them fix it and also pay for the parts that you ordered. if you take it out and start messing with it, they will only blame it on you and do nothing

The dimmer wire is always the orange/black in the harness adapter, and this is NOT the right wire for illumination, which is orange and needs a 12V switched source. The dimmer wire varies up to 12V, so if the dumbarse installer tapped into that wire, they're responsible for any damaged occurred.

That's what I was hoping to hear. I thought it was weird to get 12 volts off of two of those wires. That switch was $127 too.
