Question Location of aftermarket install

I have a 96 Corolla and the reason I have resisted putting in an aftermarket CD player is because I understand that you have to install the player in a different spot then the OEM one. The installation kit for an aftermarket player is made so you put a pocket in where the existing/original radio is, and the new player goes down lower near where the gear shift is. In my Corolla, it happens to be where the empty pocket right above the ash tray is located. Does anyone know of a way to do the install and put the aftermarket player in the same location that the OEM one is? Thanks!

I was checking out the cardomain site and mostly everyone there has their aftermarket deck mounted where the original reciever is at.

umm your aftermarket system goes in the same spot as the factory one.

What you need to make sure is that the depth and width of your new unit is big/small enough to fit in the factory slot..

The installition kit, if its a good one will have apocket for you to install in if your headunit is smaller than the factory one, that way you do not have to have a big'ol gap there and see all the wires and inner guts of your center column. Also it should come with a wire harness that way you do not have to cut and splice wires and so forth.

You shouldn't need any mounting kit at all. The original brackets should work with an aftermarket cd player.

thanks for the info guys. Maybe I will be OK. The very first time I tried to do this was several years ago and I tried installing a CD player that was one of the first every made.....got it when I turned 16 in the early 90's. It didn't have any holes to mount the original OEM mounting brackets to the stereo. So, without drilling my own holes, I couldn't figure out how to put it up there. The install kit I had was to put it lower. Maybe the newer stereo's have more pre-drilled holes for mounting brackets. If that is the case, I should be fine. Thanks again.

i just installed a CD player in a 96 corolla last week. u dont need an installation kit. all u need is a harness, to make your life easier. use www.crutchfield.com or www.etronics.com to see what CD player fits your car. take off the black panel, it just pops off (on top). you'll be able to put the CD player into the same spot as the original one. unscrew the old player, attach the harness, and attach the wires, and use the brackets from the old player to mount the new one. and yes, the new CD players have move holes in them. the harness you need, if you'll order from www.etronics.com is TWH-950. good luck.
