after a whole buncha reading and research i got some educated guesses on my current system
JBL 6CD Reciever
3.5" Speakers in the Dash
6x9 in the door
6x9 (2 way) in the rear deck. i am guessin its 2 way cause toyota said its a 8 speaker system.
jbl amp behind the glove box. supposedly rated at 50w per channel.
i want to get rid of the factory speakers and put some good speakers in there. but this whole tweeter thing is confusing me. i have read that they are connected "inline" from the front door. how does the whole watts per channel work when they are connected like that. i want to get a 4 channel amp to power the four 6x9 speakers. if i get a amp that pumps 100w x 4... how will i connect the tweeters?
thanks guys. i asked some guys at diff stores. 1 said i need a 6 channel. 1 said i need 4 and then a 2 channel. i dont want to get ripped off. so i would really appreciate yalls help.
It really depends on what kind of speakers you buy, for the fronts I recommend buying a component set (one midwoofer/one tweeter) a 6.5 will work in the 6x9 opening. Then you can put some 2 way 6x9 in the back. If you do this set up you only need a 4 channel amp (which is what is currently installed in your car) Stay away from those super buy crap you see at BB and CC, you will be buying crap. Now if you want to pay more out of your pocket then go to one of these places, or if your a do it yourself kind of guy, start shoppin at sounddomain and then look for it on ebay.
The tweeter is producing a different frequency from the midwoofer in the door, so they are getting the same power off the one channel, so if the factory amp is like 20 watts, then the tweeter sees 20 watts and the woofer sees 20 watts. Now if you try to hook up two speakers that produce the same frequency, then you will have an impedance drop which will demand more power from the amp, causing heat or amp failure, if your amp is not capable of the new impedance load.

what if i hook up 3.5" speakers which are rated at 25-35watts as my tweeters and the regular 6x9s as my front 2 speakers, and 2way 6x9s in the back. say my amp is pushing 75w to the each of the 4 main speakers..how would i power the front tweeters. if i hook it up to the front 2 speakers, wouldnt the 75w blow the tweeters?
i want to avoid the component route cause then i lose some brands that i want.
thanks for helping me. i am not good at this stuff.
Avoid the component route because you lose some brands you like? HUH?
What brands are you looking at?
Components are the best type of speakers you can get.
i want polk. but i was only looking at th 6x9 size. but i saw components under 6.5. but i just thought i would leave things similar to the way they are. just swap speakers and add amp. but i am confused bout the whole watts thing to the tweeter when a more powerful amp is add. all the tweeters that size are around 35watts rms. and polks are around 100 rms.
Personally the way I would do it is to get rid of all the stock speakers. Get an awesome set of 6.5" components for the front a 2 channel amp for them. One sub and one amp. Get a decent headunit and sound dampen the car with raammat. If not the whole car at least the front doors and the trunk, trunklid and rear deck.
1000 bucks, you can have a very nice system with 1000 bucks. My tweeter is getting a 150 watts RMS, so it just depends on what your buying. Your looking at polk, don't. You dont need a 6x9, a 3.5, and a tweeter up front, that will sound like crap. Get a nice component set, like DLS ( ) , JL, ADS, or CDT's that consist of a 6.5 and a tweeter feed em about 75-100 watts and you will be happy.

Thats becuase a 3.5 tweeter is no such animal, your probably looking at some coaxial speaker. Just make sure to read "carefully" the sales guy might say 4x75, but is that peak or RMS, BIG difference.

If you want to do a direct replacement a 4 channel will work, you will just wire the the front deck speaker witht the door speaker in parallel, but you must add a bass blocker to the 3 1/2" speaker or it will blow. I would go with a 4x50 watts rms amp. Otherwise go with components but only if you know what your doing.

i am not installing any of this. thats part of the problem cause when i take it to the store (friends gonna give me a discount) i need to exactly what i need or else i ma end up buying crap that i dont need.
OK buy a 4 channel amp, somewhere around 50-75 watts RMS x 4 JBL, Hifonics, or Phoenix Gold Tantrum.
Buy a set of 6.5 Components, tell em you want the 6.5's in the doors and the tweeter in the kick panel aim towards the dome light., crossover can be mounted near the amp in the back. Look at JL, Pionner, or JBL, those are pretty much Best buy crap, but you are not doing this yourself so you have to buy what they have, which is not much.
