so right now im running 2 subs through a converter that is hooked up to my rear left speaker because im running them on the stock head unit which doesnt have any rca preouts. i want to hook my ipod as well as my subs to an aftermarket head unit. but to do so, how many rca preouts would i need in my head unit to connect my ipod & 2 12'' subs?

The rca preouts have nothing to do with hooking up the ipod.
Are you planning on getting a 4 channel amp for the speakers? If so you are better off getting a cd player with 3 preouts, so you'll have one left for the subs. If not then a cd player with 2 preouts will work, just make sure it is a non fading rear preout.
If using an Ipod I'd rec. an alpine cd player with the Ipod interface. kca-4201

Hm, I wanted to keep my stock headunit too, so I bought the little converter thing to hook up my subs. To be honest, they worked pretty well for me even though people told me about sound degradation. I even installed my new headunit and I was kinda pissed off that the sound quality wasn't anything majorly different besides the controls.
For the iPod they sell things that set an unused FM frequency to get the music through some small antenna in your car hooked up to your iPod. They run for like 30 bucks. If you want, I can sell you my old converter for like 15 shipped if you want it for your car. It's a Soundgate and I bought it for 30 when it was retailed at 40.
But it seems like you're pretty dedicated on a new headunit.

actually i connecting the ipod does involve rca preouts, at least the way i would like to do it. as for the fm transmitter i had one but i returned it. i wasnt happy with the way it played. because i live in the hills and it is only as strong as the radio is and all i get is static. but thanx for the suggestion. it plays well in the city so whatever works for you man. yeah at best buy and stuff they sell an RCA cord that will plug straight it. so my question now is since im running two 12s powered by an 800 watt amp trhough a converter right now, once i get the head unit i can plug the amp into the RCA preouts, right? but how many will that take? 1 or 2? ....or more??
The reason why they are called preout's is because it sends a signal OUT, it will not take in any signal. If your deck has an auxilary input then you will have to use that or an adapter for that input.
The Alpine unit I was reffereing to is not an FM transmitter. Those are the last thing you want.
The Alpine KCA-4201
The advantage to this is it powers your iPod as well as links it to your CD player. This is the simplest and most effective way to use an iPod in your car.
the name AUXillary INputs has nothing to do with the type of connector used. It could be a 1/8" jack, a 1/4" jack, RCAs, or even a DIN connector. Just make sure that the AUX IN on whatever deck you settle on is a pair of RCAs.
HOWEVER, what cam2xrunner is suggesting isn't an FM modulator, but rather a module that connects the iPod directly to the deck. In effect, it becomes a part of your system, rather than something that's just hooked into it.
The problem is no decks(exept for maybe a monitor type?) Have rca INPUTS
You are going to have to find one with an auxilary input. Kenwoods and Alpine are good choices for this.
The Alpine with the KCA-420i is the best route to go becuase it charges your iPOD as well as sends the signal through a high quality connection. Not FM signals.
all of the pioneer decks have a cd changer input that if you get this little $15 cord for it adds rca's in to your deck it works pretty nifty. thats what i had before i got that dammed dvd player and i ran it all digitally through the carputer and i get some bomb ass sound, 2 bad the carputers hard drives dont like the minnesota winters
/\ Pioneer IP Bus cable. Or, if you didnt want to spend a whole lot of money, get one of the Aiwa headunits at Best Buy that has the AUX input on the front of the unit.

Hey got a link with some more info on your carputer?
i know hes not refering to an fm transmitter that was a reply to the other guy and by connecting my ipod using an rca or aux cable it is going to be connected straight into the deck
right, into the AUX IN port if the deck has one, which they usally dont, what most people including myself do is buy the convertor for the cd changer port and it converts it to a RCA IN, then you can use that cable and plug the mp3 player in
