Installing New Speakers....protective foam baffles?

I am installing new speakers into my truck. 6.5s in the doors and 6x9s in the back. Right now I don't have any speakers in my truck, so I can see right into the door. When it rains, I can see that the inside of the door becomes wet. I would like to protect the speakers somehow from moisture and dirt, but I really don't know how to do it. The only thing I have seen are foam baffles from crutchfield.com, but I have never heard of anyone using them. As far as the 6x9s in the back, I don't think I will need to protect them as much as the speakers in the door.

I was reading some other posts and saw that it is best to have the speakers in open air...so I don't know if these foam baffles would affect the speakers. I also saw someone talk about fiberglass baffles that you can make....?

If anyone could give me some suggestions on what I could do, that would be great.

Thanks

What kind of speakers do you have or planning on? Sometimes they sound better in a sealed enclosure. For the 6.5"s it would be best to use fiberglass compared to a foam baffle due to the moisture problem. One way to make it easier is to get a tupperware bowl that fit's perfectly(6.5" to 7") in diameter and use that as your mold to fiberglass to. Make sure it fits in the space in the door and it clears the window.

This thread has some usefull links for fiberglassing. Also check the car audio forums like www.elitecaraudio.com and www.sounddomain.com

Or if you want you can get some kickpods and put the mid and the tweeter in there.

Thanks for the reply.

I already have the speakers (along with a new receiver ). Everything is Pioneer:

6.5" Pioneer TS-1670R 3-way
6x9" Pioneer TS-6970R 3-way

Receiver (not that it matters) Pioneer DEH-P3600

Thanks for the help. I will be sure to read that info you provided.

Thanks again

No problem, You might also want to look into replacing the weather stripping and the window seal to fix the water problem. Let us know how it works out.

When I say it gets wet inside, its not like it is pouring in...the weather stripping isn't that bad. I just want some protection for the moisture that can be in that area along with any dirt.

I have worked with fiberglass before and it would be pretty simple to make a fiberglass baffle by using the bowl technique that you suggested. How do I know if the speakers will sound better fully enclosed and not in free air?...experiment I guess? What will a full encloser do to the sound of the speakers? Would it be bad to have all my speakers in sealed enclosures (make all of them use a fiberglass baffle)?

Thanks for all the help
