Replacing Factory In-Dash CD in 4Runner's double-DIN slot & keep Tape?

Replacing Factory In-Dash CD in 4Runner's double-DIN slot & keep Tape?

Hello Everybody,

Does anybody know if it is possible to replace the Factory build-in CD-Player of a 98 4Runner with a new one and KEEP the cassette unit? My 98 4Runner Limited has the double-DIN slot which holds both: Factory CD and Factory Cassette Unit. The CD Player died recently.

I thought I'd simply buy a CD player with an Auxiliary Input and hook up the tape unit to the new CD Player with AUX. The guys at Circuit City told me that this would NOT be possible and they'd need to throw out the Cassette Unit. Well, that doesn't make any sense to me. Does anybody has an opinion how I could keep the tape unit with the new CD player?

Thanks for your help!
Ben

At first I would agree with the CC kids, because the cable that straps the two together is probably toyota proprietary. That, and the cassette portion usually is the brains of the operation, so buying a new CD HU would give you two tuners, two on buttons, etc. The ONLY way I can see this happening is by splicing the speaker outs into FL+FR+RL+RR positive and FL+FR+RL+RR negative, or something along those lines, and splice those into an RCA, yeilding an aux in. A freakload of trouble.. You can buy factory CD players online (like ebay.) besides, who needs a tape player?

Thanks for taking time answering my question. That's very kind.

Your answer makes sense. I think I'll throw the tape player out then .

I have my 3 in one(CD/TAPE/RADIO) from my camry I'm not using, I Don't know if the harness that goes into the back is the same, or if you'll have to find out the security codes for it.. but I'm not using it.. if ya want. All you'd have to do is pay for shipping.. I'd do it for you but i'm broke as hell right now
