i had a sony headunit installed with 3 pre-outs into my 2000 solara. Speakers are stock JBL "upgrade" that toyota offers, so i haven't gotten anything new yet. I noticed the bass wasn't really hitting so i bought a pair of 1200 W infinity's at a real deal, and didnt get them installed yet, will the stock jbl amp be enough to fun the subs decently until i get enough cash for an amp? or should i just hold out until i can afford the amp?
1220w max for the subs...you're amp will laugh at you if you try to do this, and so will we. Get a class D amp for the job, only way it is going to do the sub justice
Now now, let us accept the new one. What am I saying, IM NEW!!
yeah dude, if you try and run those subs on that amp, either the amp will melt and asplode and smell funny, a fuse will melt and asplode and smell funny, or the subs will make little squaky noises that make baby Jesus cry. That and you have to splice into it in some odd fashion that voids warrenties, because I dont think its pre-out ready... I could be wrong I havent gotten a hold of one. Not that I mind voiding warrenties, you should see my Xbox. No longer in the case, its just chilling out with its innards spilled everywhere. Motherboard, Power supply, Drives, Terminals... The insides of an xbox look funny. Not to mention that having circuit boards lying out like that is inherently dangerous (the power supply could kill one of my chihuahuas, or touching the bus lines on the 'board could zap it and render it useless.) Sorry, OFF TOPIC!!
I'm being sarcastic here, but yeah, underpowering is unhealthy, even for temp solutions (and especially on that scale of power-supplied/power-needed. whoo!)

Can you elaborate on this. I don't understand what you're getting at. Not any of this was even remotely true.
But yes, that amp isn't going to be able to power the subwoofer. You'll need to save up and buy an aftermarket amp.
And underpowering isn't unhealthy. Think about it like this. When you have your volume on your radio set to 1 are you going to blow up your subs or melt fuses or make your sub produce squeeky noises?

Quote:
Lets say you have a 200W amp and your asking it to dump every ounce of power it can. Eventually the transistors get saturated, amp runs out of power, and you get a distorted signal.
Distortion as well as over powering can kill speakers.
From another thread along those lines ("I'm so confused about amps..")
It is unhealthy if the speakers cant draw "1" volume, and are asking for more.
..oh snap, is that cross posting?

Yes it's true that if you push any amp too far it will cause distortion and clipping and that can damage your equipment. Distortion comes from a ignorant operator. Speakers don't ask for power, they receive it.
The quote you presented is 100% accurate. Yet it is only half the story.
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Infin...oductDetail.do Those are ths subs i got, only i got them at less than half of that price brand new. I'm just curious as to what kind of amp i should be looking for according to these subs...
Those speakers are 300RMS @ 4 ohm. Since you have a pair your ideal setup is to get them 600RMS @ 2 ohm x 1 channel or 300RMS @ 4 ohm x 2 channels.
If you're gonna buy an Amp from Circuit City I'd recommend sticking to MTX, Pioneer, Infinity and then finally Audiobahn (in that order). From their online store those seem to be the only brands CC offers that I'd consider buying. You don't have to meet those requirements exactly (and you'll probably fall very short on your budget) as I listed above, but being able to send them as close to their RMS rating will make them sound the best they can.
Pick out some amps in your price range and post em up here.. we'll let you know what's good or not.
Those subs are rated for 300 watts rms each. I believe you have the single 4 ohm subs, so you are going to want to look for an amp that is stable at 2 ohms mono, and that can do 600 watts rms into one channel. You can use a 2 channel amp and bridge it to get one channel or use a mono amp.
