What's a JBL stereo? Reason I ask is because I see people saying they have the "JBL" stereo in their 05 Tacomas. How do I know if i have it, or is it something I need to buy?
The JBL stereo is a factory upgrade from the regular stereo. If the CD player says JBL on it then it is the JBL system. Basically a small external 4 channel amp and mediocre JBL brand speakers.
If you plan on upgrading your stereo then you're better off not opting for the JBL stereo. If you don't want to change anythin from stock then it's better than the regular system.
I was refering to upgrading to something better than Toyota's JBL upgrade.
Right now there isn't a dash kit out for the truck yet, to fit in a regular sized CD player.
You can however keep the factory cd player and get a Line output convertor to switch the speaker wires to RCA outputs for the aftermarket external amps.
As far as door speakers in the front, you will need to make some MDF adapters to fit some aftermarket speakers.
Do you want to get better speakers or subs or both? And how much do you want to spend to do so?

I saw someone had put two amps and a 6" sub in the area behind the back seats of the double cab...that is something I would be interested in doing, however, don't know how much that would cost. I don't know if that guy used the stock speakers when he did that or what, but I think the stock ones are actually not that bad.
Im big into car stereo and right now, while im waiting for a dash kit im doing the downline thing. as for having a sub put in it can be as expensive or inexpensive as you want to go. youre looking at at least 500 bucks for a box, wires, amp, install, and sub
you can spend as much as you want....it boils down to how much bump do you want in the trunk. Is the stock radio loud enough? If you like turning up the music so loud that it starts to distort, you might want to look into going with aftermarket speakers and an amp... but again thats probably another 4-500 bucks depending on what you get. the best thing to do is go to a local stereo shop(i dont mean circuit city) and get them to work up some numbers. hope all goes well.
If you dont want to wait for the dash kit get someone who knows how to do it make a fiberglass fitting for it. I'm getting rdy to do it to my dash board and it looks much cleaner then any kit.

I just received my order , i bought infinitys for the rear doors and rockfords for the front and a mtx 400 thunder amp tax and all 400.00. Although i have to install all of it myself. While we are on the subject does anybody have pictures of adaptors for 6x9 for the front doors and does anybody know where to get them or do we have to make them?

making the adaptors is really easy, just remove the stock speaker, lay it face down on a piece of mdf and trace the outline with a pencil. also mark the screw holes (duh). cut that out and then you can just use the template that comes with your speakers to cutout the opening.
