I used to have the kicker's in my camry, i was perfectly happy with them. not a lot of bass response though, i upgraded to the 6.75" components and they have much better bass.

Been having problems with my '96 Tacoma Ext Cab's Fr speakers. Finally put them under the knife. I had Kicker 5-1/4's in both Fr & Rr.. My Fr left Kicker's woofer was stiffer than a corpse on CSI.. Not sure why this happened as it's never cranked high. So I went to a local dealer to replace the Fr's, they didn't have this years Kicker stock yet, so I said to hell with it, I bought and installed 6-1/2" Alpine SPS-170A's as they were on sale. Fit perfect and the difference between these and the previous 5-1/4 Kicker's are like night and day, can't compare them. Wouldn't have thought the 6-1/2's would have that much better sound then the 5-1/4's, their not that much larger in diameter. More balls, clear at high volumes, just sound really nice. So nice that their almost over riding the Kicker 5-1/4's in the back, I have to adjust the fader just to get some input from the Rr's.
Sh*t, maybe I should replace those Kickers with Alpines too.........
Guess i'd be gaining power and sound clarity at higher volumes in Fr with an amp, but wouldn't I be losing the actual "stereo" affect withour Rr's....?
I gotta have some rear fill, plus my 6x9's offer a good bit of mid-bass to round out the system. I havent heard an argument yet that would convince me to not run rear speakers.
if youve already got the Alpine's in the front, you might as well just do the same for the rear. or if you dont mind not having rear speakers, buy an amp like Cam2x suggested. that will make any speakers sound a lot better.

I prefer the soundstage in the front of the car where it belongs, so I could careless about rear speakers.
Go take alook at some of the cars that compete in SQ. A lot of them don't have rear speakers, so I guess their weird too.
Plus I'd rather put my money towards a set of components + amp, then rear fill speakers.
Call me weird if you want, I could careless. Theres other audiophiles out there that agree with me.
That's pretty much the overall consensus at all the car audio forums too.
I'm going to be running rear speakers, but they'll only be getting power when I have a movie playing, for surround sound. But for music it's all about the front soundstage.
One of my friends the other day was commenting on how my car's sound just "wraps around" him. He was impressed by lifelike ambience and likened it to a movie theater. I told him I only had speakers upfront with the exception of the sub in the trunk. He was really perplexed. I would imagine most people would be surprised at how "spacious" a properly set-up 2 channel front stage only system can sound.
Anyways, I've found that if you run rears, you should keep them fairly low just for front stage enhancement. Unless you are putting together a party system for those drives to Vegas with a bunch of your friends jammed up in the car. Poker, lap dances and all you can eat Bacon.....(sigh)
well what youd have to do is actually have a specific sub out on the back of your head unit. and then fading wouldnt affect the sub....with most head units its just an output and the fader affects it...i used to have that problem till i broke my old unit and got one with a dedicated sub output.
is there anyway to turn down just the rear speaks, if i fade to the front then i lose the subs. which sux
I had to indiviually amplify all my speakers to get the soundstaging I wanted. I am partial to Cam2's with NO rear, but I do like a little rear fill so I had to amplify it and turn the amp down to the level I wanted and turn the front up to keep up with the subs
