DVD/Navigation safety help...

Hey there. I have a 2003 Landcruiser with a factory touch screen navigation and a factory DVD player that will only play when the car is in park. Can anyone tell me how to override this safety feature? We have a 16 hr road trip this weekend and it would sure keep the kids quiet. Thanks a lot.

That's something proprietary to Toyota only. You cannot (and should not) bypass it because it's the law.

i hesitate to post after Luc's comment...
people make homebrew bypasses, something that sends the "this car is set in park" signal at all times up what i guess can be called a remote in line to the HU. Couldnt tell you how, I'm definately no EE. With factory wiring, you will have a hard time getting what wire to tap into since everything is taped and bundled inside the dash. I dont know if there is a simple way to bypass it within the two/three days you have... anyone else?
Aside from that, its illegal because it causes (or can cause, argue it either way) major distractions to the driver, causing an unsafe driving environment. However, I can see the screen being a point of contention among the kids, "I cant see! Jenny is blocking the screen!"

A little birdy told me that the singal wire to tell if the car is in park is justa simple grounded connection. If u find the right wire, just ground it to the frame and u can play movies all u like. However if a cop sees a movie playing in front of the driver seat, you will get a hefty fine and they could impound the car if they wanted to since it doesn't pass saftey regulations at that point.

that is how "someone" like me would do it.....lol

wire that wire into the ground and there you go, you could get a wire printout from the local 'yota dealer to see where you wires go if you ever have any "problems"

as for the road trip, I love the TV's I put in, I go back and forth to NC from GA and they love them, keep a fresh supply of DVDs though they get old fast

Is it possible to put a switch in between the ground and the power so that if a cop does pull you over, you could flip it somewhere near the shift lever?

Anything is possible. All you would have to do is wire swith in the middle of the wire going to ground.
