i been thinking to put subs in place of the normal door speakers and add some tweeters to hit my highs, also i'll up the back speakers to some 2~3 way speakers or something as well ....
You're probably not going to like the sound without any midrange. YOu'll have a little bit of bass, then you'll have your highs. It will be missing alot of the frequencies that make up your music.
What do you have against a regular subwoofer?
If you are trying to do a subwoofer-less system, I would rec. a component set with good midbass response. And power them off an external amp. Some of the better components out there have very strong midbass while still reproducing the midrange frequencies.
i have nothing against normal subs just trying to do something diffrent ....
oh well guess i'll just go with 2 tens in the back then.......
next question that confuses the hell out of me .......
which way are you spost point them things ........
most people have the boxes set so the subs face away from the cabbin .... some have them pointing down ....... and some have them pointing to there .... some pointing up ..... which way is the best???????????

^ and leaving it that way!
Depends on the car. Most people with sedans point them towards the back. I have a truck and they'll be pointed towards the front of the truck..
Try them in different positions to see what sounds best. Also if you don't mind losing your back speakers you'll get more spl out of the subs without them in there.
You won't have enough airspace in the door to handle a subwoofer and it will sound like utter crap. Not only will your music sound like shit without midbass, but you'll just hear a lot of rattle unless you use a lot of sound deadener.

WORD!!!!... hahah... more of ur music is in the mid section and not bass.... u dont want to lose them... u know what... if u wanna be different from most people.. buy 6 6in woofers from jl... build a custom box for them in the trunk... this sounds SOOOOO pure.... im a big fan of little subs... ive gone from 18 woofers... to 8inchers... at one point i had 4 12s in my old solara... but i think imma go for 6 inchers or 8s at the most from now on... but if u just want ur music to rumble and have other people here u coming just go get 18s...
I have soundstream 6.5 seperates in my door and after I too "soundstage" them and get them pointed the right directions they are awsome, the tweets remind me of the crispness of MBQuart and the doors like Cerwin Vega. but 6.5 fit niesly with no modifications, 8 inch if you build a baffle and trim the door panel out, but why 6.5's do great
If you want to be ghetto, get computer speaker subs on discount. That's what I did... They're usually 12v and can take DC.. It's only good for normal listening, not booming though. You can connect it up to the preamp output since there's an amp in the computer subs.
physically...the subs should be facing backwards. Low frequency waves are omni directional and it wouldn't normally make a difference. HOWEVER, the more path there is between the subwoofer and the listener...ie internal volume of the arena, the lower the sub will actually play to the listener. Things I learned while training for my MECP certification
