an inaccurate indicator. The bigger the magnet is, the heaver the sub is, that is about the only correlation that holds true to all subs. who makes good and affordable subs?

Lucan,
what you might have heard is that magnet size/strength can effect sensitivity.(which can be true depending on other factors) And i think what the other guys were saying is just focus on the TS perameters. Thats where you'll really be able to determine what will sound like what.

heavy subs= rice for stereo. Magnets mean nothing in terms of subs, frequey response, rms power, peak power, and reccommended space for enclosure should be where you pay more attention
That's the most retarded thing I've ever heard. Magnet size/weight does not relate DIRECTLY to the output or SQ of a sub. But let me ask you this, how many competition subs do you see with tiny little magnets, because magnet size does not matter? None. It does matter, but it is not the only factor in engineering of the sub. For most people use of subs, you do not need a ginormous sub, especially since box size/tuning/whatever will make more of a difference in sound and SPL than anything else.
Now as far as rice subs go... chrome and lights/leds, retarded looking grills... can't think of much else.

Cadillac's stock subwoofer has a bagnet about the size of a 1.5" tall silver dollar. While it doesnt pound or shake anything, it still sounds decent (making old people's barry manilow sound good for once) so I assume that magnet is used fairly efficiently, regardless of size.
