03 Sienna w/JBL - can you use aftermarket player with stock amp

Hi,

I haven't been able to find much info on this, so here goes. I have a 2003 Sienna with the JBL system and want to replace the head unit with an Alpine unit. Do I have to bypass the JBL amp or can I interface the head unit to that amp?

Thanks,
Angelo

You should be able to do either one with the appropriate harness adapter, since not all Sienna trims come with the JBL system.

Hmm...I'm thinking I should just bypass the amp...

That'll have to do until I get a decent 4-channel amp. Does anyone know if there's a nice way of doing this with some sort of installation kit or will I have to splice wires on the amp's output side. Is there a wire color code chart anywhere for the JBL system?

Thanks in advance,
Angelo

PS: which amp manufacturers are good nowadays? Its been a long time since I've done anything with a car stereo as far as amps/subs are concerned.

It depends on if Toyota prewired the van for the non-jbl system. I know the Camry's and Solara's with the JBL package come with an additional harness that is prewired for the non-jbl system. You'll have to pull out the CD player and see if there is an additional harness tucked away back there.

Here's a thread on how to bypass the amp if you have the additional harness.
http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t70082.html

If you don't have the harness there, the way I would do it is just run a new power wire with an inline fuse in it from the battery. Tap into an accesory wire such as the cigarette lighter for the acc lead. Run a new ground wire and ground it somewhere with bare metal, you might have to run it through the dash to the kickpanel to find a good grounding spot. Then run new speaker wire from the CD player to the speakers.

This way the old system will be left untouched and if you ever sold the van you can re-connect the factory headunit easily.

Depends on your budget and what type of system you are going for.

Check this out for a good deal on a decent amp.

The nine.4 will work very nicely as a 4 channel amp for the system.
