Factory Amp v.s. Amplified Deck

Hi there,

I havea 200 Camry XLE with the JBL Premium system, and I'm planning on purchasing a new deck (well i have to cause i burnt mine). anyways, how does the car's factory amplifier compare to that of the the amplifiers in aftermarket decks such as Sony/Pioneer/JVC that say 50 or 52 watts x4 and 200 watts total.

It'll be powering the stock from speakers and a pair of Alpine 6x9's (I don't remember what model, i burnt the rear channel on my deck a couple of months ago, but I can tell you, they sure sounded good for the 2 mins i heard them : ).

Thanks for anyhelp

I have some new Alpine 6x9's (SPS-690A 50-250w) and believe me, youll want an external amp. To stick to what you have in your question, I'm pretty sure that the internal HU amp will outdo the factory amp.. at least that was the case in my 94. That amp was designed to push on some 15-X0w speakers and this little 5x7 subwoofer under the rear bench. Any decent head unit should outperform that thing.
Unless the "premium audio" system has taken great strides in the last few years... I'm going to be tearing into my mother's '03 cam (premium JBL) setup in a few weeks, since she likes what I have in "The Cheat" better (my '94 cam) so I'll know better after that.

ive done this in my 2001 Camry XLe so if you have any questions you can pm me

but i can say, dont go with either the JVC or the Sony headunit... pioneer is ok, kenwood, alpine, eclipse you should go with

and whatever amp your headunit had puts out more than whatever that crappy ass factory amp is.. my Kenwood sounds much better with the JBL's

like i said if you have any questions pm me or post on here.. ill help you out with it

thanks a lot for the replies,

i have a cheap amp that i purchased. i installed it and hooked it up to a cheap bass tube (jensen) and it was all working perfectly until my second 6x9 in the back blew. so i decided to buy the Alpines, and yeah they're the 690A.

the input to the amplifier was what was connected to the 6x9's (high level inputs), i had a grounding problem so I would hear a wine going with the engine. i dunno what happened when i was trying to get rid of that sound, i lost all the sound going to the rear.

yesterday i was trying to see if it was from the deck or factory amp, and i cut the red and white wires coming from the deck. i tried to connect them directly to the speakers in the back, but it didn't work. so i put the wires back together. and everything was back to normal (front speakers working only). today i went in the car, and the deck won't turn on. i checked the voltage on the lines, the power, ground, and accessory and they all had the required 12 V (with respect to ground). so i'm assuming the deck is burnt.

i'm thinking of the following 2 decks: Pioneer DEH-P4500MP and the Kenwood KDC-MP228 . when installing, all i do is disconnect the factory amp harness, and connect the aftermarket harness to that connection to the new deck. i don't need to bring a new ground/power?

You need the correct wiring harness and a installation kit (its a pocket that fills in the space underneath the headunit).

And no you don't need a new ground or power.
