I'm wanting to get a security system w/ remote start for my 05 Tacoma. I had a CompuStar on my last car and it was really nice. The remote had a cool LCD screen and it would page me if my car was messed with.
Do you guys know of any other nice alarms with remote start. I'd like to get one with some long wireless range.
I have a few friends that have had some problems with Vipers. It might have been the installers fault though. The installation is just as important as the product.
I do like some of the Clifford alarms. Lot of features, but pretty expensive and complicated. I like the idea of their computer link, which lets you adjust settings on the alarm with your home computer.
I think I'll go with the CompuStar 2W900FM-AS (alarm with remote start). I think I'll get the Arctic Start version, which is the Candian version that has a 6000 ft range. I had an older CompuStar before, and it was really nice. Never false alarmed and had great range and features.
I have the Viper Responder with remote start. I think it's 691XV or something like that.. It's their remote start with the responder remote that you're looking for. The range is decent, not as good as my previous Viper alarms but good nothing to be upset about. Works extremely far. It'll reach your car from whatever store you're leaving from.
My only complaints are that they only give you one remote and the battery (AAA) only lasts about a month. Other than that I can't really complain.

Hmm... Could be due to faulty installation or user error.
I've had a customer come into the shop once and she swore that her alarm was faulty. She accidently put into valet mode.
On that note, I've installed many Viper alarms without problems.
I've heard from some istallers that the SS had problems when it was first launched. I'm not sure if the probs have since been corrected.
2 way technology is pretty reliable now. CS vs. Viper...it comes down to personal preference. Viper has a bit more support since it a DEI product, whereas CS is a small independant but with a great customer service record.
Well, that's good, because before you posted I changed my mind and went with the 2WSS. The technology of the 2WSS is a few years old, so I was thinking that I should go with the newer 2W900FM, but after searching around I decided to go with the 2WSS instead. But I do like the look of the newer remote on the 2W900FM.
I have an 05 tacoma, so I also ordered the engine Immobilizer Bypass module, and a second remote.
The total was $285, shipped, brand new. Which I think is pretty good.

Can't go wrong with Viper.
I've never used or installed a CompuStar, so I can't say much about them in terms of quality or reliability. But, I've heard good things from people that have them.
