Is it possible to hook up subs to a HU that doesn't have sub outputs?

I'm helping my friend install 2 12 inch JL audio subs, he bought a 1500 MTX amp, and I pulled out his JVC HU and notice that there aren't any sub outputs, is there anyway I can still hook up the HU with the amp/ subs? or is he going to have to go buy a new HU?

I tried to telling him to get an alpine HU, but he got the car with the jvc already in it, and hes too broke to buy a new/ better HU.

Any help would be apprciated.

Thanks

Yes you need a line converter. Stop by your local car audio shop. Get one that is at least 2v.

does he have pre outs?

if you have pre outs just set the amp to sub-level (xover setting)

I'm not sure if this is the same model, but it doesn't have 5v preamp output as to what crutchfield says http://www.crutchfield.com/S-AJFXJZe...ecs&i=113MP825

The jvc does have preamp outputs, but I was just curious as to how you can control the bass, since the jvc HU has very litttle features and very little change in bass, tremble, ect. Also, why would there be some HU's with sub preamp outputs, when you can just use ordinary preamp outputs. < I'm a lil confused..

If I use the preamp outputs, how can I wire them up? Also will it be worth it to wire it up like that or should I just tell my friend to save up and get one that already have sub preamp outputs.

Also another question, the preamp output on the JVC HU is 2V, 4V will sound better right?

Thanks

You hook the amp's RCA connections to the preamp outputs on the headunit. Then, you can control the bass directly on the amp (not while you're driving, unless the amp is right next to you), or you can change the bass on the headunit as well.

Some HU's have seperate sub and preamp outputs because not everyone uses an amp for subwoofers, they might have it controlling other speakers. That way, if you run out of preamps, you can hook the subwoofers directly to the headunit, and control the bass from there.

Some decks will have a front out, rear out, and sub out.

The front and rear outputs are fadeable (has fader control). While the sub out does not.

Some will also have a level adjustment on the sub out and built in crossovers.

You wire it up just like any other pre-amp output. Pre-amp output from deck --> amp.

The higher the pre-out voltage, the better (IMO anyways).

Higher pre-out voltage = higher s/n (signal to noise) ratio. And less voltage drop along the line.

You can also get an in dash eq for a about 80-100 bucks probably around the same price as a really good inverter. This will allow you to control your bass mids and treble while providing a 4v or higher output to an amp or amps. This will also keep your amps cool and allow you to get cleaner power to speakers or subs.
