I have **OFFICIALLY** changed my opinion on Sony subs!
My Ascendant Audio Atlas 12"(which costs ~$140 normally) blew so I went around town searching for a replacement sub. I came across a supposedly crappy Sony 12" woofer at Wal-Mart. I only have 2 words to say about it: ITS AMAZING!
This thing sounds crystal clear and gets like 1" of excursion! It's being forcefed ~300w rms.
So, I have come to this conclusion: people diss on sony stuff because it doesn't cost alot and they believe the rumors.
I have a sony 12" sitting in my room awaiting a 12" box because my Duals crapped out on me.. I would stick it in the Dual Box.. but then I'd need something to fill in the other side of the hole.. I think my amp is dead too...

The atlas is supposed to take 300w rms. I gave it that at 4ohm. The voice-coil became detatched from the cone, so it would knock around in the pole at low and high excursion.
Steve, the reason I am trying to sell the Atlas is because I am having Ascendant Audio warranty it, and I am going to buy another woofer. Basically, I am trying to sell the new woofer that AA is sendig me.
And for the haters: Atlas sub takes 300r rms, so does the Sony. ALso, I bet you've never even heard the sub.
ive owned a lot of $100 subs and ive fried a few voicecoils
but never had anything detach
whatever you bought is garbage...i dont care what you say
quality speakers dont come apart in a few weeks
i agree with you that JL stuff is way overpriced for what you get...but its still good
i think there is decent kicker stuff and crap kicker stuff...as with most companies
but i have listened to lots of sony subs...they all sound plastic and they are all pathetic excuses for subs
Overrated? A lot of these underground brands get reps from internet forums by people who don't really know what they're talking about. If you feel your Xplode is better than your Atlas then you're either tone deaf or the Atlas was a peice of shit deal. The fact that it fell apart within a few weeks kinda shows this.
Perhaps their higher end equipment is better sounding, but perhaps it's not worth the price either and their build quality is their build quality...
Don't forget these underground smaller companies have to pay more for their parts, more for manufacturing and more for distribution. Dollar for dollar you're often better going to the store.
basically i think ohwjajae is trying to say...
you get what you pay for
if you buy a $100 sub, dont expect it to stick around long or sound that good
if they made $100 subs that were awesome, why would anyone spend 250,500, or however much you want to spend on subs?
so i guess I am considering sony crap as compared to a good sub...like an eclipse aluminum 12"
i bought it for 240 bucks online
i pounded the shit out of it for 4 years with 500 watts and it is still in great shape
the only reason i am retiring/selling it is because i am getting the next bigger badder meaner cleaner...etc...
before i got my aluminum i had a bunch of cheap subs
i chewed up a jbl sub, a few mtx subs(5), a rockford, a pioneer, and some no name...firestorm or something like that
i had a 300 watt MTX blue thunder amp ...all of the subs were about 100 bucks...
luckily i was using circuit city's extended warranty so i only spent 150 bucks for all of them....lol (the rockford i bought from a dude i knew but the others came from circuit city)
basically....I could have bought a better sub for the money i wasted on blowing crappy subs
it will sound better and last longer
