subs for an extended cab tacoma

I've been thinking about putting a sub in the back of my ext cab taco, but I still need to use the seats. I was wondering if anyone knows if I could make a custom box and cut it in between the seats? I only want like one 6-8" sub or so. I don't really care about some huge banging rumble from it. I just want it to take some of the load off my speakers and give it a nice sound. So, yeah, has anyone cut a box down in there or know if it can be done? Thanks

Ok, well I actually have no idea about anything when it comes to sound stuff. I know basics and that's it. So any help is much appreciated. Knail, I just looked at my real speakers and they said "mobile sound crystal" are those stock, or worth keeping? (I bought this truck used and the upfront speakers are pioneers and I don't know anything else about what the guy put in there.) and if I put subs in the rear speaker locations, won't that take sound away? I want music with a good sound, not just bass.

Here are some creative solutions: http://www.jlaudio.com/stealthbox/tacoma.html

If you're a hands on type person, you could make your own with fiberglass. I just did a custom box for my Camry this past weekend.

Hmm...That'd work. I dunno if I want the box sticking out so much. I guess that's what I'll have to do if I want a sub in there. I wanna know what's under that carpet to see if I could put it in between those seats.

Does anyone know if those Mobile Sound Crystal speakers are worth keeping?

The absolute easiest way to do this(and it'll turn out good) is to pick out a sub that works well in a free-air enclosure (aka infinite baffle) and mount them in the rear speaker locations.

If you can, take off the rear door panels and measure the amount of depth from the speaker mount to the outer door skin. As well as the size of the opening.

After I have those measurements I can show you some subs to look at.

It's just extended cab, so there are no rear doors, but I'll try to take off the panels....I'll figure it out somehow. The speakers in there right now are 6.5" across. I'm going down to Santa Barbara tomorrow, so I won't be able to do anything (or post) until I get back. Also, taking out the rear speakers and putting in subs won't take away from the sound quality? Like I said, I want music not just bass. I don't know too much about sound systems, so I don't want to screw anything up.

Actually taking out the rear speaker will help in sound quality. 99% of serious sound quality installs run absolutely no rear speakers.

If you have a good front speaker system with adequate power from an external amplifier, then there is no need for rear speakers, and in most cases can throw off the imaging and staging that a well installed and tuned front speaker system produces.

Check out the new EU-700 from www.edesignaudio.com

It should fit into the stock opening and will work very well as a free-air sub. Just gotta check the mounting depth limit in the stock rear speaker opening.

Also factor in you should be using a MDF baffle to install them, so that will give you anywhere from 1/2" to 1" of extra mounting depth clearance.
