Please note that I have been actively searching, and will continue to search this forum, but thought I'd get some feedback from some of you (especially cam2xrunner). I'm looking to upgrade the HU along with possibly adding dvd and/or nav capabilities.
So far I've looked at the Eclipse 5435 and have found a local place that will do it for $1800 installed. I know that on Solaraguy.org someone is selling them for $1500, but everyone around here is quoting me over $100-$200 for install so I'm still debating it. That and the fact that they claim that they have to modify something to cover the gap that exists in the dash once the OEM radio is removed (don't know if this is true or not).
My other option besides the Eclipse AVN unit is maybe getting the Premier DEH-860 HU along with a DVD player and the screens in the headrest. Or maybe a Hu with a pop out DVD screen. I'm open to any recommendations for this
I'd like to know if anyone can refer me to a good online retailer for screens in the head rests. Figure this would be a cleaner look than a drop down unit. Should I buy the screens and have someone cut into the headrests? Or should I spend more and special order the head rests with screens built in?
Any opinions regarding set-up, brands, and such are welcome.

That guy Jackass-Jeff(on solaraguy), can get that unit for 1600 installed. 1500 bucks an an awesome deal too. You can't get them on ebay for that price.
I would get that unit myself if I was going for an indash DVD/Navi player.
I'm not a big fan of the Pioneer Avic units.

Yeah I read one of the links you posted up about a guy who had some problems with the Avic N2 unit. Also, the same guy who is offering the AVN unit says it's possible to bypass the gyrosensor thing on the AVIC unit by temporarily blocking the relay to the gps. Says he has done it before, but I can't confirm if it's true or BS.
Other units that I've been offered is a Kenwood and Alpine IVAD flip out units. Both are pricey, but neither feature the navigation unit.

Yeah if Navigation is a needed, IMO the only way to go is with the Eclipse. It just so happens to be one of the lease expensive routes to go, and it is a damn fine SQ headunit as well. 8V preouts, 9 band Graphic EQ with time alignment.
The only thing the Eclipse unit is missing is onboard crossovers(IIRC)
Not a big deal though, alot of amps have capable onboard crossovers, or you can use a 3 way Audiocontrol crossover or similar.
I believe the Eclipse unit just has to have the parking brake wire grounded for the DVD player to play while driving. I may be wrong though.
I'm a fan of Pioneer headunits like the P9 combo and the DEHP860MP, but would never put one of the Navi unit's in my ride.
Also, if you have steering wheel controls you mightr want to get the AVN30D (same as 5435, but allows steering controls to seamlessly integrate without the use of something like the PAC SWIX.
I did a quick Google for AVN30D. It sends me to some links on ebay, but none of them are listed. Do you have a link or a source where I can check it out?

cam2xrunner: thats right, u just ground the parking brake wire...
p.s. be sure to remember to switch over to Navigation mode if a cop sees u
That's exactly what a friend of mine told me to do since I've been hesitant to have a screen up front. Probably the only reason why I'm leaning more towards the Eclipse unit since it has the built in Navi.
Still debating on the screen for the rear seats though. I need something to keep my 3 yr old occupied on long trips and my old ride had 2 screens (one in the dash and one flip down unit). The flip down unit seems like a cheaper alternative. If it obstructs the view maybe I can add one of those rear view Eclipse cameras...
Otherwise, does anyone know of either some reputable company names for small TFT LCD screens? Or a place to get the headrest screens for a good price? I've heard of brand name ones like Alpine going for $400 each, but there are cheaper alternatives like Performance Techniques, Pyle, Rosen, and other companies that I can't keep track of.

Just did some interesting reading over at nasioc.com. Seems like quite a few people have been disappointed with the Eclipse's AVN display. Says it pales in comparison to the Pioneer's Nav display/mapping.
I'll try to find the link again, but if anyone is interested you can go over there and search for Eclipse 5435.
On another note: Anyone have any feedback on Panasonic units. I'm looking at a couple of them and trying to research them.
