Open channel on amp / speaker wiring

It took me 2 days of work (5 hours each day) but I finished installing the wiring for my amp.

All the wiring is there, but the amp is not in place yet. What happens if I put the amp to power my speakers, Polk component set, but leave the channels for the subwoofer open (no speaker there)? I'm waiting for my Mr. Marv enclosure so I cannot use the subwoofer yet.

Also for the components, is it ok to run 12 ga to the passive crossover and then 18 ga to the drivers? Or is it better to use all 12 ga? The reason I ask is because I have just enough wire to run from the crossover in the door to the trunk, but not much more. I would have to buy more cable to do it. The 18 ga cables are the ones that came with the speakers. The 12 ga cable is the type that came with the amp install kit from KnuKoncept, IIRC it's called Klear Kable.

The sub will run 300W RMS, and the cable will be about 1 - 2 ft long, will the 12 ga suffice or should I go bigger?

For the speaker wiring on the components 18 gauge will work ok after the crossovers.

12 gauge is just right for the sub, any bigger isn't needed.

You can run only 2 channels off the amp that will be fine. OR in the meantime, bridge the amp for the components

What amp are you using btw?

If marv hasn't shipped you your enclosure yet, ask him to give you some 16awg speaker wire.

Thanks for the help. The answers were more or less what I expected. I just wanted to make sure so that my car doesn't catch on fire, or I don't damage the amp.

I am using JBL Px300.4, so I won't be bridging the fronts. Doing so would put 300+ W RMS into them when they're only designed to handle 100 W RMS, and 300W peak. I'm probably already pushing it putting 120W into them.

Oh ok, yeah those amps are pretty powerful. Nice for running a whole system.
