I have a 91 Pickup and I'm looking for a good 10" subwoofer and amp for a good price. I want to have a sub that has great sound quality, and have something that I will not have to turn up too much for a little bass. Was looking at something maybe in the 500-2000w range, but thinking a 400w might be best paired with a good corresponding amp. I want something that will have great sound quality with great bass at low volumes, and something where I can turn it up and it'll make my ears bleed. This is asking a lot form just one 10, but I know with a proper setup and properly designed box tis is possible.
I was looking at the Alpine Type X, and the Power Acoustik MOFO subs, but I'm thinking thats just too much.
Also was looking at the Image Dynamics IDMAX subs, and the Ascendant Audio Atlas subs, but not sure these will be ear bleeding subs when turned up. I know they're praised for good sound quality, but I don't know how much "thump" they will produce.
Any suggestions are appreciated. Basically what I'm looking for is a great SQ/powerful 10" subwoofer and a good amp. Price is not a concern at the moment, but I will not have a huge budget when I go to buy these.
500w to 2000w opens up a pretty broad range of possibilities... Also, it looks like you have a '91 Toyota truck, so my next question is, where do you want to mount your sub(s)/amp? Does it have to be a certain depth? Will it fit anywhere??
Would you mind posting pictures of the cabin of your truck (you have no back seats obviously..) and where you might think a sub would fit??
People are going to recommend you a lot of stuff, but if you're going for pure SQ, I'll go ahead and throw out some things paying no particular attention to price... (This is all stuff I've heard personally)
* Stereo Integrity Magnum D2 (I've only heard the older gen...they were pretty f-in' good)
* IDMAX
* IDQ (if budget is an issue)
* JL W6
* Elemental Designs Ov.2
* Soundsplinter RL-i
Ok here's where it's going:
This is right in the middle of the truck behind the seat over the transmission. I plan on making a fiberglass box that will span about the span of the pic, or about 2-3ft wide on the back of the truck. I'm going to aim the sub up about 20 degrees from where back meets the floor. This will more than likely be a temporary setup until I get buckets and make a center console.
The amp will more than likely be mounted to the left of the sub, directly to the flat sheetmetal or in another fiberglass enclosure for a floating amp. So the amp can be pretty big, if need be.
Yeah I've looked at the Elemental Designs and IDMAX and I like them, and heard the produce great SQ, but I'm wondering if they'll also hit quite hard when called upon.

Yes. Both those subs dont' take a lot of power to get moving.
Since you haven't give me a budget to work with, I'll throw a couple more out there:
W7
RE XXX
More along the lines of "SQL" drivers with tremendous output. Wait for Cam2XRunner, Eddie, or mcv to come on -- I can almost guarantee they'll reaffirm some of the stuff I said and recommend some other options...
Since, you're building an SQ setup, I'm going to assume you already know what components (and also what amp to run them) you're going to get...?
At the moment I'm unsure of an amp. I really need to get my sub picked before I buy my amp. I have or can get most of the components that I'll need. Right now I'm just looking for a good hard hitting SQ sub and some amp combos, if I don't pick an amp. I really like the ED amps...they look like great amps.
I guess what I'm looking for is a SQ sub with SPL qualities.
EDIT: Oh, and has anyone heard of Lanzar subs? They looked like good subs and pretty cheap too, but I haven't heard them or heard about them so I can't verify if they are good or not.
Only thing made by Lanzar to consider are the Optidrive amps. Everything else isn't really up to par with some of the names being thrown around in this thread.
Have you figured out the max mounting depth you will be working with?
Every sub mentioned here is awesome. The main thing you need to consider before buying a sub is the mounting depth available and the available internal airspace of the enclosure you will be building.
Most mounting depth I can get max would be close to 15 in. As for airspace I can build that according to the sub I get, since I'm doing a fiberglass enclosure
ID Max 10 would would great for application, in a slot port box. Maxes, dont require alot of power to make em move (min 600 watts), if you want a little more output consider a Brahma 10, still maintain SQ of course.. The max requires a bigger box than the brahma, the brahma wont really start moving until it gets about 1000+ watts.

Cam I can basically have the depth as much as I need to a certain point, as long as it doesnt hit the seat. It's probably less because I just gave an estimation earlier.
wait which sub from imagedynamics is there best? there all meant for sq right? thanks alot like always.

And then the price points are spread out for obvious reasons (mostly because a max is EXPENSIVE to build).
Sure the max will have plenty of SQ, but in my opinion it's not our best sounding speaker. I has a great mix of power handling, efficiency, excursion, and refinement that make one bad speaker. But what happens when you don't want a 1,000 watt amp and you don't want 36lbs (per speaker) and you don't have 8" of depth to mount this thing... Different speakers different applications. I would suggest taking a look at the IDQ line for moderate levels of extremely accurate bass, the ID line for average joe daily driving at higher output levels of accurate bass. In any event, you can call us and speak to the tech, you might even get a hold of Eric (owner/principle engineer) who takes tech calls from time to time. Get some input and go.
FYI the IDQ 10's Fs is 26Hz
For those that don't know;
Fs = resonant frequency of the driver
It depends on what you are looking to get out of the system and what amount of power you have available.
Two IDQ15's will give you a good mix of SQ and SPL
