so i was thinkin about gettin a new head unit instead of havin to wire my system actively. i was thinkin the alpine 9851 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1099388650606
this is ipod ready and it has 3 amp outlets which would be fine for my four channel and 2 channel amps. it has 3 pre amp outlets and is ipod ready which is good. then the y splitters would be n/a and it would look nicer. what do u guys think and what would this kind of wiring be called if its not called "active"

You'd still be wiring active, the advantage of using a decent headunit is definitely there. You'd want one with a good flexible crossover.
If you like the Alpine head unit's I would look for a 2004 model CDA9833 or 9835 if within your budget.
Wiring "active" is basically not using regular passive crossover such as these, using 2 channels of an amp.
Instead you use 4 channels and give each individual speaker its own output off the amp. You can use the amp's onboard crossover(if you have a bandpass) or you could use the headunit's onboard crossover(preffered)
You can also opt to use an electronic crossover instead of a headunit. Look at Audiocontrol.
I'd suggest using a headunit with a flexible 3 way crossover. One of the Alipine's cda9833 or the newer cda9853 would be best.
Also consider the Pioneer DEH-P860MP. about 335 shipped, but imo is a better unt for the money than the Alpine's.
If you don't use MP3's and don't mind not having a detacheable face, you can get an '03 model Eclipse CD8053 for about 300 shipped.

would the 9853 hook up w/ the 9821 wires or would i have to find someone to install it

I was actually considering buying the CDA9851 until I found out Alpine doesn't put 4V outputs on all their head units anymore.. only the higher end ones have it now. Anything under the CDA9855 is 2V. I rather get the Eclipse 5425 which is $50 cheaper and has 5V outputs than the $349 CDN CDA9851.
I would stay away from the 9851... The 2005 model lineup from Alpine is become notorious for being poorly produced and problematic in the long run. I speak with all honesty being a Best Buy employee myself and we've gotten A LOT of returns/complaints about the 9833.
On a similar note, I'm really dissapointed with this year's Alpine head unit lineup. For example I have a 2004 CDA-9807 in my Camry -- their entry level head unit -- and it has 4V preouts whereas the 9833 you're looking at is this year's midrange model and only has 2V preouts. I guess Alpine decided to skimp on engineering/production this year, but yet still managed to keep their prices high. IMO,
This thing takes in one channel of amplification and seperates the frequency into two channels. One to the tweeter and one to the mid. Using this is called wiring passive.
When you wire Active(opposite of passive) you do not use the passive crossovers. You instead use a single channel of the amp for each individual speaker(tweeter/mid) And make the crossover adjustments on the amp/headunit/or electronic crossover.
Wiring Active will give you better results if setup properly and tuned properly.

does that just mean that it has better control over the amp

The crossover on the headunit is just like the crossover on your amp. It basically blocks and devides different frequencies to each speaker. This is very important when running an active setup, because you have to set these crossover points when setting this up or you can damage the speakers.
