Apparently, I read in another thread in the off-topic forum that in the state of California, it's a felony to carry a knife with a blade in excess of a certain length, but only a misdemeanor to carry a concealed handgun.

I'd like to see a thief continue to steal when there's a 1911 loaded with hollow tips pointed right at his chest.
