Bose system, 4 wires for rear?

This is for my friend. He has a bose system in his maxima. The rear speakers have 4 wires going to it. We took apart the little dome that goes aroun dthe rear speakers and we found a "sigma audio" box thing. It has 4 wires going to it, but the speaker itself just has 2 from he box. Question is what is that sigma box thing?

Thanks

Could be an amplifier. I remember hearing some bose systems have their own amplifier for each speaker.

Not sure though.

All Bose speakers have their own puny Bose-rated amplifiers driving each speaker @ 1-ohm, roughly. They do have built-in filtering so it will sound "good" with the stock unit. When upgrades are needed, the two options are: 1) forget about it, or 2) gut it ENTIRELY and rewire everything. No Highs, No Lows, It Must Be Bose, So Out It Goes.
