What makes audio compoents good and great?

I was driving through the next town yesterday and notice this lady with a bunch of car stuff on her front yard and a big cardboard sign that said for sale. I found out it was a disgruntled girlfriend sale and she was selling a bunch of his boyfriend's stuff at really discount price. The guy that came before me was negotiating the price for a newer model Dodge Ram 2500 4 door diesel longbed pickup truck...I heard them saying somehting liek $2,000....

I picked up an Eclipse CD8454 head unit, an Image Dynamic IDQ10 sub and ID CSX6 compoent speaker set, crap load of KnuKonceptz wiring (Kolossus 1/0 g power wire, Karma RCA interconnects and speaker wire) , and a Fluke DMM for $100 . Even the DMM alone is worth that much.

Anyhow...I brought it back to my home and my friend was asking why I had all that stereo equipment and was ragging on me about buying those stuff I guess because he never heard of those brand and telling me how great his car set up was.

He has an Alpine HU of some sort with all kind of fancy graphics and colors, four Pioneer 4-way speakers (coaxial) all around (doors and deck), two 12" Alpine subs, a Pioneer amp with 800W stamped on it, and an Alpine 4 ch amp with 40w / ch. All this is wired with a Rockford Fosgate amp kit, interconnects, and speaker wires. He bought everything from Best Buy so if what I'm saying is off somewhat...it's whatever the closest thing Best Buy has. He demoed his system to me, and I tried to listen to his system, but I couldn't stay in there for more than about a minute after he turned it up. The bass was there and the trebble was there, too much in fact that it sounded really harsh or shrill and the mids were almost non-existant. The highs seemed drown out almost everything other than the twin 12s in the trunk which just rattled his car (1998 Nissan Altima).

I know the stuff that I bought at the scorned woman sale is good or better than his at least, but I haven't even tested any of it, other than the DMM, so I don't even know how it sounds. But what separates the stuff I bought compared to my friend's setup? From what I can find out, those things I bought are highly regarded at the forums that I have looked at, here and Soundillusions.net. The Eclipse HU has a MSRP similar what he paid for his Alpine HU. The 10" sub cost about the same as his each of his 12" Alpine subs, and I guess KnuKonceptz stuff is a bit less than RF wiring, I dunno what he used...

Is the stuff I bought like audiophile level gear or ??? and his setup the typical ricer setup??? What makes audio stuff great vs just good?

1st question: Yes. Very good.

2nd question: Yes. Not "typical" but a Pioneer "800w" amp comes pretty close. The difference between the both of your systems is day and night. Seeing how he got it all at Best Buy -- I work there -- I can tell you right now that he probably paid upwards of $1000 for entry-level stuff. At least he isn't bumping Dual/Sony/Jensen stuff and ragging on your system.

GOOD SCORE.....the stereo equipment was a good deal..... go back tomorrow and see if anything else his dumbass left there is on the yard. Personally I'd buy the truck for resale only.....$2000.....wonder what he did?.....must have been monumental
