Ground problems

What would be the best place to ground my amp in my 88 Corolla sr5, I have a 1900 watt kole amplifier(i thought $100 was a good deal for a 1900 watt amp) and I am really starting to regret buying it, I think I don't have a good enough ground though because if I turn the amp up very slightly it turns the protect light on and before I bought an amp wiring kit it was fine and rattling my insides, but now the sub barely even moves because i cant turn the amp up very high. I am just guessing that it is the ground, but if anybody thinks its something else other than kole amps are pieces of crap I would greatly appreciate it because I really miss having the bass that I used to. Thanks in advance.

Sell the POS amp to your local high school car audio n00b. 1900W is a mighty-high number and some kid bound to buy it -- you might make your money back and then some.

If you're worried about grounding, find a bolt/screw that holds your rear seats to your chassis, sand down the metal and ground there. I seriously doubt this is the issue, but it might be worth a shot....

Or just run a the wire to the ground on your battery so that way you know for sure if its a grounding problem or if its a POS.

A blown sub can make your amp go into protection mode, because the speaker may be shorting out, which decreases the resistence and makes the wattage output surge way up.

When an amp goes into protection mode it is usually something to do with the speakers. Most of the time people have them wired wrong; too low of an ohm load. Remember, Parallel wiring cuts the ohm load; Series wiring increases the ohm load.

But it wouldn't hurt to make sure you have good clean ground connection. I like to use the bolt that holds down the rear seatbelt buckles. Scrape off any paint. You want metal to metal.

Never run ground wires straight to the negative terminal of your battery. Always use a good Chassis ground close to the amps. Keep your ground wires as short as possible.

this is the 1 time in life where shorter is better, ground wires should be NO MORE than 18" long

... but don't make the wires so short that you can't make good connections and access your amp to make adjustments.

I didn't know there was a ground cable length rule. The only rule I know of is how close you need to keep a fused power wire near the battery. To compete in Sanctioned sound-offs you have to have your main power wire fused within 18" of the battery.

I have it hooked up to the bolt behind the license plate, it seems to be good afterall, but It doesn't really matter right now because I have an empty sub box now because there is no use in having it hooked up because its not gonna put out sound anyway. But, thanks for all the help, and I wouldn't have even needed to ask if I would have checked the speaker in the first place, it's just that the heat index has been around 105 lately and I dont wanna be in my car messing with stuff. Oh well, I'll just buy some better stuff eventually.
