4th Generation *DIY* BIG-3 for gen 4 camry. i4 engine

ok this is a DIY for the BIG-3 for the gen 4 i4 camry's

here's another link on how to do this...

http://forum.sounddomain.com/ubb/ult...c;f=5;t=007801

ATTENTION---ALWAYS DISCONNET THE NEGATIVE TERMINAL ON BATTERY BEFORE DOING ANYTHING AND DONT PUT IT BACK UNTILL YOU ARE COMPLELY DONE!!!!

i suggest you go to the other link i gave out becuase it explains more to what the BIG-3 is. ill only explain it alittle

the big-3 consist of running 3 new wires.

1-battery negative to chasis.
2-chasis to a mounting post on engine.
3-battery postive to positve terminal on alternator.

when grounding soemthing always sand down the paint on the chasis to get a better connection. when running the wire from positive battery to positve on alternator i suggest you put a fuse inbetween. i used a 80amp fuse. i used self tapping screws to ground the wires becuase there is no need to drill a hole and then putting a screw.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

first up is the battery negative to chasis.

first thing i did was to disconnect negative on the battery. then i removed the fuse cover right next to the battery and removed 2 black fuses(circled on picture) and i sanded down the paint where i was going to ground the wire. then i had to take off the intake cover off becuase my drill didnt fit. if u got a small drill u dont have to move the cover of the air box(intake).

^the circled part is where the 2 fuses were that i moved so that the drill can also fit

^here i show where i sanded down the paint and it also shows the negative wire ran from the negative terminal on the battery which will be grounded where the paint is sanded

^this shows the negative wire ran from the battery grounded. make sure the wire isnt loose

after you are done grounding the wire u can put back the 2 fuses and the fuse cover. and u can also put back the air box cover if u removed it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

now we are moving on to the CHASIS TO ENGINE part of the big 3. i mounted one end of the wire to a mounting post on the alternator and the other end i grounded to the chasis.

^here you can see the wire which is grounded to the chasis part right over the headlight and to a mounting post of the alternator

here you can see the mounting post of the alternator to which i attched the wire to.you have to remove that bolt which is pretty long. the bolt is a 12mm. now you are done with the secong part

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

the third part is BATTERY POSITIVE TO POSITIVE POST ON THE ALTERNATOR.

^here you see a wire ran from the battery positive post to positive post on alternator. notice the fuse on the battery. i put wire loom on the wire to protect. to run the wire i attched it to the radiator with zip-ties. look at ur radiator and near the bolts u will see where you can put zip-ties.

^here is a close up of the postive post on the alternator. the bolt is either a 10mm or a 9mm. im not sure.

^here is the wire which is ran from the battery positive to the fuse and from the fuse to the positive post on alternator.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You are now done. now that you are done double check to make sure that there isnt any loose conenction. after you are done with that you can reconnect the negative terminal on the battery. if i have done something wrong please let me know so i can correct it. i wish you luck with this. if you have any questions please feel free to ask..........later

Thanks for the DIY writeup
Do you know about how much length of wire was used?

I plan to do this for my Camry. What gauge wiring should I use? The PX is having a clearance on a couple spools of 8 AWG. Is that good enough or should I go bigger? My amp is spec-d to draw 87 A max IIRC.

You should get 4 guage wire for the battery -> alternator ground... the others can be 8 guage.

Can I double up the 8 ga instead of using 4 ga? It's going for 40c / ft and the PX doesn't charge sales tax or anything.

If 8 gauge is all you got that should work fine. 4 gauge is a little bit overkill. But it's nice to use 4 gauge.

It's not all I have. It's just a logistical issue.

Lucanhookup, did you ever get around to measureing the length of wire for the alternator positive to the battery positive?

Lucanhookup, whats the fuse rating that you've used between the Alternator and Battery. I understand the rating is directly related to the gauge of the wire, hence what would be the rating for a 4gauge vs 8gauge.

u gotta match the fuse rating to the rating of ur alt, if ur alt pushes 80amps then u got to use a 80 amp fuse. i used a 80 amp fuse on mine. but imma change it to a 100amp fuse, cuase when u check under ur fuse cover on the factory fuses(next to the battery on my car) it says
"alt 100amp"

For the ground cables:

1) Why didn't you just run a 4-gauge straight to the under the battery tray, as in the stock, for chassis?
2) Why didn't you run a 4-gauge to the engine block by routing it as in the stock?
