How do you like the Focals? Also what do you think about the AVN? Was there a GPS antenna that needed to be mounted? And if so, where did you mount it? Are you running the the 300/4 Bridged to the Focals, or Active, or just off 2 channels?
First off, I LOVE THE AVN!! I did have to mount a GPS antenna, but was able to do so under the dash on the passenger side (not visible!). The GPS works great, however I still need to tap into the speed sensor which I can seem to locate. The only small concern I have with the AVN is how slow loading mp3 cds are, however Eclipse said they are working on a current fix, so I'll be patient. I'm actually running the 300/2 to the Focals, using the supplied cross-overs. I'd like to know more about running active, but would be my first time, and don't want to kill my focals by doing something wrong. The 300/4 is bridged on the front channel and powers the sub.
The focal tweeters are great, coming from some high end MB Quarts; I had some what high expectations. At first the Focal mids were putting too much bass for my liking, but was able to adjust that with the pimp EQ on the AVN, and my adjusting the DB level on the cross-overs.
I also plan on getting the color matched dash kit for Taco Tunes, and replacing the current black one I have now.
Ah, I was figuring you were using the 300/2 bridged, but that would make sense, because I don't think the W1 can handle 300 watts rms, although you can turn the gains down, and you'll have more headroom. Then you can usethe 300/4 bridged to the components and still get the 150 watts rms x 2.
Or perhaps does your Focal crossovers allow bi-amping? If it does, then you can utilize the time alignment feature between the tweeters and the mids.
If you were to wire it active without the crossovers, you would need an electronic crossover, because if I'm not mistakin the AVN does not have a crossover, just an equalizer. Can you confirm this?
Also I don't think your 300/4 has a bandpass filter for the mids, so I think you'd be outta luck there too.
Unfortunately the cross-overs don't support bi-amping else I would be doing that for sure. You are correct; the AVN only has a EQ, and doesn't have a crossover functionality.
I might think about upgrading the components in the future, so I could do the bi-amping method; but i'm pretty happy with the focals for now. They are really clean and bright.
Do you think switching the amps around would help?
I would It can't hurt to switch the amps around, you might benefit from it. I wouldn't upgrade the Focals if you like them, those are pretty good. The only logical upgrade from this point imo, would be to get a sub that will take more advantage of the 300 watts rms of power you have available.
If you really want to get into active get a nice electronic crossover. Maybe something like this one.
first of all congrats nice work looks super sweet and custom for sure i was wondering what size jl w1 sub you got in there and how much did it cost to make a custom box for it and how does it hit? great work on your truck man!
Thanks everyone for your comments! I was able to fit a 10" JL W1, I also beleive a pioneer premier would fit with the limited depth which would be a step up from the JL. It's hits really nice, very clean bass. I payed around $150 for the box + extra capet so it would match the amp board.
I am getting my Tacoma on the 15th of this month, and I know nothing about stereos except I dont';t like the one that it comes with. I want to put a screen so I can play dvds and get Gps, but because of the weird design and unamerican form I cant just buy anything and stick it in. Any advice on where I can go to purchase a screen/kit to fit my truck? Any help would be great. ---Cam2xrunner, do you still have your stock head unit?

Alex, there is a dashkit on ebay for like 15 bucks plus shipping, that will allow you to use a double din unit.
Are you looking to do a carputer or do you want something like the AVN www.eclipse-web.com
I rec. the AVN5435 or the upgraded AVN5495. There's also the AVN30D which is basically the same as the AVN5435, but it allows you to utilize the steering wheel controls on your truck(if you have them)
Do you think the dash kits on ebay would match the interior of my truck? Because its like a weird color, its not black. I like the eclipse screens/navigation but if I wanted to play dvds, where would I put the disc? Also how much would the AVN30D run me? Thanks and sorry about all the questions as you can probably tell Im really excited about this.
If you want to be able to use the Nav, and have another opening for a DVD, you should spend the extra $ and get the AVN5495. The 5495 has the navigation built into it's 30 Gig HD. The Navi. takes up 10Gig's, the other 20 gigs, you can store mp3,s and stuff. All while having a dvd in the unit as well.
