Ok, my friend is giving me two of these, except he said that he thought they were rated to 500w peak. He ran them both off a 800watt amp...but according to this site, they're 300 peak power. Anyway, are these decent speakers? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=39774
Must've been a TERRRRRRIBLE box. That should NEVER happen -- under any circumstances.
yeah, it wasn't the boxes fault...it may have been teh fat kid...we won't mention anynames, who was reapetedly jumping on teh back seat and smashing down on to the box...
I don't really need hardcore bass all the time, I listen to a lot of different music, From Mozart to Tupac, but there are just certain times that I want more bass then my other speakers can offer (when I'm in a techno or rap mood) so a nice cheap setup seems logical to me. So what kinda amp (powerwise) should I be looking for for subs like these? Also, how do I hook them up to my Pioneer 4700 which doesn't have sub preamp outputs?
Well if they are in fact 4 ohm SVC and you have two of them then you can use a mono channel amplifier that will do around 300 watts rms @ 2 ohms.
Wire the subs like this.
You can also use a 2 channel amp and wire them in stereo like a normal set of speakers(one channel to each sub)
You would need an amp that does around 150 watts rms x 2 @ 4 ohms.
Or you can get a 4 channel amp and bridge it to make it into a 2 channel amp, then wire it like you would the 2 channel.
This is what I would porobably go with. If in the future you want to upgrade your subs and get a bigger amp, you won't have to hawk your amp too, you can instead use it on some comps or some mids.
If I was looking for something new off ebay, I'd get a '04 Model Diamond D5300.4 It will cost about 120 bucks shipped and will give you 150 watts rms x 2.
You can make just about any speaker sound good if it's in the right box.
I have owned some of the best speakers that sounded terrible, and some of the worst drivers that sound incredible.
I have a set of PYLE 12's in a ported box that will absolutely amaze you. That's a driver that cost $49 each retail. I hit 142 dB with only 2 of them being driven at 250w each in a 1995 Chevy Monte Carlo. The speakers were rated at 60w each, I think. I still have them today for my DJ system (except for now they are joined by 6 more of them, with 5000 watts going to the set of them)
I also had 4 JL Audio 12w6's in a sealed box in the same car that sounded like JUNK. I paid $200 each for those subs, and another $200 for the box. The company that sold them to me went out of business before I could return them...
Bottom line is that the quality of the bass coming out of a speaker is more dependant on the quality of the box than the quality of the speaker. I would say it's probably about 10% speaker / 90% enclosure.
I have always found RF's speakers very hard to get the boxes right, but if you can get it tweaked right, they sound awesome.
