A/C dont work with new Dash, Camry Forum is clueless ? ? ?
Ok, this is what my "old" dash looks like (this is not my car, this is just a pic i found online)
this is the cool new one: (again, not mine, found online)
Problem is when I hook up the new one the A/C doesnt work anymore! When I press the A/C button it doesnt light up and the compressor no longer turns on.
When I plug in the old Dash the A/C works.
I found out thru trial & error that these two plugs have to be plugged in for the A/C to work:
So I"m thinking there's some sort of wire or resistor or something INSIDE THE DASH UNIT that tells the A/C to work or not. It should be as easy as cutting a wire but i need to know which wire to cut.
AC is manual, not climate control
As you can see these two plugs are different. The one on the right is what's in the car now, the one on the left is what came with the multidisplay dash. See that yellow wire on the right that isn't on the plug on the left? I went ahead and cut that to see if it'd help but it didnt do anything, everything still works the same.
First things first, I'm 100 percent sure you have an XL Avalon and not an XLS. If you did have an XLS you would already have that unit, and Automatic Climate Control.
And I'm pretty sure what you are trying to do is going to take some serious work to do.

I think he was thinking about taking legal action and hes trying to get some serious proof.
But if anyone knows, PLEASE RESPOND because I am extremely interested in this problem as I've been trying to figure this out along w/ Deekay and Avalon for the past few hours.

i cut the yellow wire seen on the right of this photo:
the one on top is the plug that came with the multidisplay, the plug on the right is what came with the car, so i thought, cut the yellow one
no good.... no change at all
as for the XLS/XL issue, until someone can show me proof it's not a XLS I'm gonna have to go with what it says on the car. I always wondered that though, but besides the fact that it's missing options a XLS *should* have I can't do crap about it cuz no judge on the planet would listen to "your honor, all XLS's had climate control and this one doesnt so i'm owed thousands of dollars"
that's not a very strong arguement. Title just says "AVALON", no XL or XLS. Carfax says Year/Make/Model: 2001 TOYOTA AVALON XL/XLS Body Style: SEDAN 4 DR Engine Type: 3.0L V6 PFI DOHC 24V Manufactured In: UNITED STATES

I used to sell these vehicles. I am VERY familiar with these cars.
I'm sorry to say but you do have an XL. You CANNOT get an XL with automatic climate control. Also XLS models are equiped with factory woodgrain.
Got any more pics of your car? The XLS will also have different wheels than the XLS.
XL models come fully equipped with side air bags, dual-zone air conditioning, power windows, door locks and mirrors, and a 120-watt AM/FM stereo with cassette and CD players. XLS models add automatic climate control, a driver information display (compass, trip computer, outside temperature and calendar functions), fog lights, aluminum alloy wheels, remote keyless entry, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
Ahhh car sex...haven't had that in a while. Good luck with that man.
Oh, and as far as the XL/XLS thing goes...it all depends. Where did you buy the car from? Do you have all the documents? If it happened to your car (and say it was from a dealership of somekind, used or other wise,) it wouldn't surprise me if its happened to others, then it becomes a big problem, because that means someone is at the very least, false advertising the XL for and XLS and probably taking that little extra you payed off the top for themselves, and that is then at the very least theft. It would hold up in court no problem, its just a matter of getting all the evidence together.

"but ur honor, internetautoguide.com says this is really a XL!"
yeah.... i'm sure that'll go over real well in a courtroom...
That was the first thing I could find off the internet. Get a brochure for your car off ebay or something and you'll see.
I could care less about your wanting to sue somebody for misperesenting a car. I'm just trying to help you realize what kind of car you have so we might be able to better help you do what you are trying to do.
Here's another way to check if your Avalon ever had automatic climate control feature. Look up into the passenger footwell area and find the ECU. It's easier if you just drop the glove box. If you see 5 plugs going in/coming out of the ECU, and one plug is missing, then you don't have the XLS w/automatic climate control, and what you are trying to accomplish will not work.
I'm speaking from an '01 Gen4.5 XLE V6's point-of-view, with automatic climate control. This is just a hunch, not a conclusion.
