bandpass = more volume but muddy sound.

sealed = more punch but not as loud. cleaner sound.

Generally easier to construct the enclosure, too.

Ported can often give you insane SPL gains, depending on the driver(s) used, and they're tuned to a specific frequency. Not that it won't play at other freqs, it will just be loudest at it's tuned frequency.

But there comes a point when you might want something that sounds good and isn't just loud.... That's when you get a little crazy. I would know nothing of the sort about that, though

Wanna do it for free? If your subs are in the trunk, turn them around, so they point toward the back of the car. The sound waves will reflect off of the trunk and overlap as they come back into the cabin. This is an old trick that can make your subs twice as loud.
