This topic has been beat to death, but it's always a good idea to keep things fresh. So all you Nazi's, don't tell me to search, because I have, lol. I have an X-Runner and I want so (over time) put in a new system. I don't wanna get subs, I just wanna get door speakers. Now, eventually I want to get a small amp (and use the factory head unit).
So, what I need... new rear speakers, new front speakers, new tweeters (maybe?).
I'll need an amp later, but not focusing on that right now. I want good bass response as well as clear mid and high range.
So, let's hear your suggestions and setups.
Thanks for whatever input you may have.

If you are going to go with components(which I highly rec.) then you should wait til you have the amp and sound deadener for the front doors. The deadener alone is going to improve what kind of midbass response you get from any speaker.
I don't like 6x9's in any situation really, a 6.5"-7" midbass can have pretty good output if it is powered by an external amp.
TO keep the stock radio and add an amp, you'll need a line output convertor. The NE774V from Davidnavone.com is very good.
I have one for sale for 25 bucks shipped btw
Go have a listen to the JL XR components and the Alpine Type-X components, both can be had on the internet for about 200 bucks, and are pretty good.
Feel free to browse the A/V forum here too, there's alot of knowledgeable people in there with good info.
If you're not under a strict budget you should check out CDT components. Their higher end models can get pricey but they're worth the money. BTW if you're gonna upgrade to any kind of components you really owe it to yourself to use an amp for them. The head unit alone won't push the speakers to their full potential.
I keep reading and hearing from all the so called audio experts that 6x9's are no good and you should go with 6.5 components. Thats a bunch of bullcrap. I have had tons of systems in my life from stock with speaker upgrades all the way to a $15k com system. Let me tell you from my experience that a good set of 6x9's in a stock 6x9 locattion will give you great sound and some bass. My favorite 6x9 which had tons of bass was the JBL T545 which is no longer made but the new version which is an import and can be had from ebay is the JBL T595. aLSO THE Infinity referance are great 6x9 as well as the polks. If you just want to upgrade and add an amp later go with 6x9 and get the audiolink line level converter from crutchfield and that will allow you to add an amp to your factory head unit. No need to add subs and tons of other speakers and amps if thats not what you want. For some reason and not just this forum but most of them , whenever you ask about upgrading your speakers you always get a bunch of people telling you the factory systems are junk and to rip it out and add $$$$ worth of amps, subs, etc. Just upgrade your speakers and add an amp later and you will be happy.
It just means that, unlike a regular speaker where the music signal goes from the head unit to a single speaker used for high and mid frequencies, the music will go to a set of crossovers and from there it will get divided into different signals. One for the tweeter and one for the midrange, the cone shaped part of the speaker. Keep in mind there are different types of crossovers and components this is as basic as you'll probably find them.
You're better off replacing just the front speakers and leaving the rears stock. Put more money in to a good set of component type speakers (seperate woofer and tweeter) rather than four 2 or 3 way speakers.
You want the majority of sound coming from the front of the vehicle unless you normally go to a concert and sit with your back to the stage

I'm finding that I'm simply wanting a little more high end, not bass. The little tweeters on the upper doors don't seem to do much... the radio is set to 0 Bass boost and +5 treble, but sounds muddy.
Is there a replacement for just the tweeters? Or will a good 6x9 with a tweeter add the high end I'm missing.
Note: I DON'T want to add any amps or crossovers, etc. Just replace either the little tweeters or the 6x9 door speakers. (or both)

If you don't want to add any amps, you're best off with a set of coaxials. I liked my Pioneer Rev Series Coaxials(2 ways) when I was using rearfill. I'd give those a listen.
Just disconnect the original tweeters after you install the speakers.
For speaker adapter baffles you can get an MDF wood ones from Marv for 45 bux, or you can get ABS plastic ones from www.tacotunes.com
