Whether you personally like Honda's or not, it's hard to deny that the Civic is a well-made, safe, and reliable car. It is not such a big stretch to compare a new xD with a Civic, but I think that comparing a used 2002 F350 diesel 4x4 with 30k miles on it with the new xD is a bit like comparing apples & oranges. A buyer looking at an xD is probably not doing comparison shopping with pick-ups. Two completely different types of vehicles. A new Civic and a new xD are fairly comparable, and I think for 20K you would be getting more car in many ways if you bought a Civic rather than an xD. That's all.
^^
Thats why I said what I said. It's all about percieved value. I don't feel that I'd get my money's worth if I spent 20k on a Honda Civic. I think the interiors are cheap and I dont' care for them.
the xD has a much less cheap feeling interior to me but once again it's all about percieved value.
Since xD's start at $15,170, you could get into one for much less then 20k. Now custom wheels and all other sorts of options will raise your price . Civics are the same way.
P.S. how many standard options does a bass level civic come with?

Based on Consumer Reports, and all the major automobile magazine reviews, the Civic is a better, more desirable, safer, faster car. Will xD's outsell Civics, do you think? If I were in an accident, I'd rather be in a 4-door Civic, than a 4-door xD. Anyway, this is my last post on this subject...it's getting painfully boring. <yaaaawn>
you should compare the XD to the jazz/fit as they are comparably priced. You will not get a new civic for $16,000 anywhere. The XD blows away the jazz/fit with 20% more power.compare the civic to the next corolla and toyota wins again.
Okay, okay. Whatever. Still, spending 20K for an xD seems a bit much. I mean, for 20K you could buy a LOADED Honda Civic (coupe or sedan) which is also very reliable, has great resale, is more substansial than an xD, and is safer too.
The xD is cute, but 20K is a lot for a little.
For 20K, there are unquestionably better deals out there. Period.
Wow, 20K for an economy car? A LOT of $$$!! I think I will wait to read more reviews & see how people like them. So far, I've read often that they are underpowered. Also, because they are brand new, dealers are not discounting them at all. after they've been around for awhile, they will be giving deals on them.
I think that the extended warranty was a waste of money...only the dealer will benefit from this. (That's why they push them so strongly). On a car as reliable as a Scion or Toyota, it isn't necessasary. You would only buy an ext. warr on a car known to be unreliable. (Why anybody would BUY a car known to be unreliable is another matter...).
I do hope you enjoy your xD...I just think that 20K could have bought you a much faster/safer/more substantial car, that's all. You may have rushed into this buying decision.
128hp w/125lb ft of torque is underpowered? MotorWeek tested it last week and it did 0-60 in 8.3 seconds. That's faster than a Civic. There is no test out yet that says the Scion xD is unreliable. Buying extended warranty is his problem, that is his money.
I never said/suggested the Scion xD was unreliable. To the contrary, it's a Toyota product, I expect it to be highly reliable...that is why I feel it was a big waste of money to buy an extended warranty on this car. It benefits the dealer, not the buyer in most cases. It is a HUGE money-maker for the dealer, and that's why they push them so hard.
What I said was, a person should only consider an extended vehicle warranty on a car known to be unreliable. (like some crummy American-made car, or a car rated by Consumer Reports to be much worse than average for reliability) However, why would you even consider buying a car which has a poor reputation in the first place?
I think the Scion xD will run well for many many years. I still feel it's a little underpowered and anemic. I expect the sales figures for this model will be a disappointment for Scion. Too bad, it could have been a much better car. It's over-priced (if you get it with decent options) for what it is.
Bobbyro, I like the way you think. You sound like me. The other thing I must comment on, as in what my old friend Bill Sheare stated..."There is no such thing as too much horsepower", I agree with his statement.
scion pure pricing allows for no negotiations on price. salesmen make the same commission off any scion regaurdless, so theres no upping or lowering of the price.

I actually just traded in my 06 Matrix XRS on a Scion Xd with automatic. I like the car, and according to the on board computer I am averaging between 37 and 38 mpg. I dont expect it to run as strong as my XRS, but its a very competant cruiser.
