Oil Filter 2008 Scion XD

Just purchased 2008 Scion XD for son. I always change my own oil. Appears that Scion XD 1.8 liter uses a paper cartridge oil filter rather than a traditional spin on filter. Do i need to get these from Toyota/Scion dealer? Is it simply a matter of unscrewing a metal housing and replacing the paper element? Is is easy, messy, etc. Picking up the car in 3 days; just curious. Thank you.

can be messy.. so far toyota is the only place i heard that sells the filter.. till the other companys make them.. its kinda messy.. if you just take the housing off.. but if you do it the right way.. it can be cleaner.. but i hate the drop in filters.. but as a flat rater.. time is money and those drop ins take too long!!

I already changed my oil and filter at 1,000 miles. I put the car up on my ramps. Drain the oil pan with the drain plug. Next, the filter housing is on the passenger side of the oil pan, you can't miss it. I use one of those oil filter wrenches that attaches to a 3/8" drive ratchet...the wrench I use is the type that expands with 2 ears on it on opposite sides, and its got a spring that holds a slight pressure on the ears to keep them together. You can buy one of these oil filter wrenches at AutoZone for a few bucks, and they fit a number of different sized filters, ( I like the way it works). Anyhow, the filter housing unscrews counter clockwise. Just put an oil pan underneath to catch the little bit of oil that leaks out. Pull the filter element out of the cartridge housing. Put the new filter element into the housing, remove the old O-ring on the filter housing, replace the O-ring on the filter element housing that is provided with the "new" filter element. It's always a good idea to lightly coat that new O-ring with motor oil before putting it on the housing...providing a better seal. Then with the new O-ring and filter element installed in the filter housing, just screw it on clockwise, (make sure that you don't cross-thread it). And of course, don't forget to put oil back into the engine. Start the car, check for leaks...always a good idea after changing oil, and you're all finished. It's really not much different than the old style screw-on type filters. The only place, so far, that sells the Xd element that I am aware of is Toyota. They are about $6 a piece. On a difficulty scale of 1 -10, I would declare this a (1.5). (1) being a regular screw-on type filter, and (1.5) for the cartridge type filter on the Xd. Don't stress out, it's a piece of cake. The entire filter change shouldn't take more than about 10 minutes. Just take your time, no big deal.

thats not the correct way.. and also very messy.. but i didnt say it doesnt work.

if you are the only one to work on it.. than i would do it the correct way.. by taking the little cap in the middle off 1st with a 3/8 ratchet and use the little plastic drainer to drain the oil in the filter housing. once u take the drainer off. the little o ring comes off as well.. next take the housing off using a 65mm 14 flute oil filter wrench .. install the new little o ring and tighten the little cap at the bottom to specs.. which its noted at the bottom ( how nice ) than install the new filter and new big o ring. ( make sure this o ring is in the right place as it can fit in a few places ) than reinstall back in the car or torque to spec using a 65mm 14 flute oil filter wrench and not using a 3/8 ratchet with extension in the middle as this can make it hard to remove later on

Wonger, first of all the link you posted is for a Tundra, (that's a full sized Toyota pickup truck). The question was in regard to changing the oil on a Scion Xd, not a Toyota Tundra. Yes the Tundra does use a cartridge filter. I own an 08 Xd, and it does not have that same feature of having a little drain on the filter housing. So, you are one who is wrong! I have changed my oil already once, and its a very simple process, and its not messy at all. Please don't confuse or ill-advise.

Wonger, the other thing you are "Wronger" about is the fact that the Scion Xd only has one O-ring that comes with the new oil filter element, and it's a larger type of O-ring that fits very near the threads of the oil filter housing that contains the filter element. so far all the cars i done that has a drop in filters have the drain plugs.. i have not done a xD yet.. but i figure since all the other toyotas have it.. i dont see why toyota would cheap out on the xD but than again toyota already cheap out on the cabin a/f on the older scions not sure if the new scions come with them

ill have to take a look but its hard to believe that it doesnt have a drain for the xD

The xD doesn't have the little plastic drain that the 5.7s and the 4.0's have. Also, it does come with only one o-ring. Some vehicles you need more then others.

I just changed the oil in my Xd...is there a gasket on the drain plug? I couldn't tell if it was a gasket or a raised section on the pan. It didn't come off easily and I didn't want to scratch its surface if it was part of the pan.

I added a gasket Toyota sold me with the filter but it was a different diameter (larger) from what was on the pan.

the pan should be flush.. that thing stuck on the pan is the toyota factory gasket.. should be kinda blue. the one toyota dealer gave you may not have been the actual gasket. the dealer makes more money by selling a cheaper made gasket for the price of the original one. if you torque the drain down correct .. the other gaskets will be fine.. but the cheaper ones tend to break if you over torque them.. i could be wrong..but this is my experience dealing with many types of gaskets.. the expensive ones seem to be the best i seen

oh to remove the old gasket.. which imo can be used at least twice. i use a small screwdriver and just pry it off the pan.. dont worry bout the pan

Thanks for the info,

The one on the pan was very smooth and kind of blue which made me think it might have been part of the pan.

The gasket sold to me by the dealer was very different....larger, rougher and thicker.

Both will come off on the next oil change and replaced with a new one if I can find a dealership that sells the correct one.

I was somewhat suprised that the dealer uses bulk 5-30W Castrol but not really.

The part number you want for the oil pan drain plug gasket is 90430-12031. Retail price is $1.05

Thats strange that a toyota dealer would use castrol as a bulk oil. Toyota's own oil is manufactured by Mobil and toyota Bulk is what we keep in our tanks.

um i would only run one gasket.. having two.. might cause a leak.. even make the bolt loose and fall out
