Just over a decade ago, I did a report on aspartame as an assignment
for my organic chemistry class. I found that people who drank *lots*
of diet soda (more than, say, 8 cans a day) had more health problems.

I always wondered why they would put a methyl ester group on
aspartame... (that's the CH3-O-... part on the top of the first
picture). Gets converted to toxic methanol in the body. I guess an
ethyl ester group wouldn't be as sweet... (would be converted to
"liquor" ethanol instead).
