Civics and corollas are NOT dragracers, they arent anything like race cars. Only thing in common is 4 wheels.
They both are ECONOBOXES, sure people will debate SiR/TypeR/GT/GTi/GT-S corollas are sports cars, uhm I dont think so, they're just the faster ECONOBOXES.
Suspension is not comparable directly, Civics have double wishbones (new ones I think have mcphersons) and Corollas are mcpherson'd. Both have their advantages and dis-advantages.
The cars werent directed to motorsports, they're directed to families and low-consumption, economical driving. Sure anything can be modded, but I'm referring to factory spec cars.
