07 Tundra TRD Freeway ride?

I just got a 2007 Tundra double cab TRD and I love it. BUT, driving on some LA and Orange county freeways the rear end is very bouncy, to the point of uncomfortable ride. I've had many trucks before, and this is the worse by far. I caulk this up to very stiff rear suspension in the TRD package. But besides running sandbags in the rear is there anything else I can do to stop this. Its pretty embarrasing when I have clients in the truck. I was thinking about putting Rancho 9000's on and running them very soft. Would this solve the problem. I'd apprieciate any help. Thanks!

How many miles do you have? Reason why I am asking is because when I purchase my Tacoma it was bumpy ride for the first thousand miles and then dispated as I accumulate more mileage.

I have about 3K on it right now. The bumpy ride doesn't bother me, in fact I prefer it. THe thing is in Orange County and LA county (I do alot of freeway miles) there are long sections of the freeway with rises and dips (s*&%ty freeways) its actually hard to control the truck with no weight in the back because of the tight suspension and low profile tires. It really hard to explain without going for a ride. Trust me I'm not a whinner about these things uswally, but its so bad its hard to hold a conversation with the person next to you, and nothing will stay on the backseat it I'm going around 70-80 MPH without weight in the bed because of the violent shaking. Its just not what I expected, I've had Chevy's and Ford's in the past and they were nothing close to this. I guess the bed is much lighter then what I've had in teh past. Other than that, this has been my favorite truck by far. I just want to get this taken care of without puting a permanent weight in the back, like sandbags or that water thing. I may just go with a set of Ranchos when they are avaiable. Thats for hearing this rant, I'm just trying to find a solution to this I feel like such a whinner.

That's odd...my finicky-ass wife thinks my truck is smooth as hell, even on shit roads. It's a lot less bouncy than the 4Runner I had before. When we hooked up the boat (5K lbs) she said it was even smoother. Her ass-meter is more tuned than mine....I just think it's always smooth!

Take your truck light off-roading. I have a 05 Tacoma and after I took it off-roading I noticed the suspension to be a lot smoother and softer. Your suspension needs to "cycle" or "relax" i dunno what you call it.

Hey Krock, I know exactly what you're talking about. I had a TRD sport package on my Tacoma Double Cab Prerunner long bed. That damned thing jumped all over the freeway going from Lake Forest to La Jolla. I have a Crewmax now. I thought about the Double cab with the TRD package, but opted not to get it because of the stiff ride. However, It's great to have when you're on city streets. I hope you find a good solution.

Why do so many people buy the "off road" package for a truck that will spend its whole life on paved roads? I see huge numbers of FX4's Z71's, etc. all over.

I have the standard suspension and it is actually quite capable of moderate off-road use with the low pressure gas coil-over dual-tube shocks. If I wanted to go more hard-core, the tires, not suspension, is what needs to be changed. Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor look like the current state-of-the-art in on-off road tires.

When I was shopping for a truck, I was able to test drive otherwise identical GMC Sierra's with and without the Z71 package. Like Toyota, the main difference is Bilstein single-tube shocks.

I actually do a quite a bit of of road driving with the truck as part of my job, but to get to these spots you gotta take the freeway..... And I like the stiffer ride the Bilstein shocks provide for day to day driving. Toyota set this thing to ride super stiff and with out a load in the back it rides rough. More so then any Chevy I have ever owned. But I recently put 4 40Lbs gravel bags in the back and its alot better. I still LOVE the truck.

TRD Ride

Hey guys-

I just test drove both the TRD and non-TRD Tundras in Double Cab. I'm a young guy and am used to/fine with a stiff ride. Hell, I'm buying this thing to tow my race car, so my back is used to feeling the bumps. But I'm worried about being bounced all over the place on the freeway. I'm taking it out again tomorrow for an extended test drive to see if I like it, but I dont want to think I'm fine with it on the test drive and then hate it 6 months from now.

I pretty much need that TRD center console because of all the storage space, so if I can take the ride, I'd like to get it.

Any other input?

Have any of your trucks "loosened up" over a few thousand miles?

Anyone tried the softer shocks?

JClark, after a few months and alot of miles on the truck their is a solution. Always have a load of 100lbs or more to elimate the problem. But if your are using this truck to tow a race car you will be fine. The TRD suspension is set up really firm from the factory, pretty much to carry a very heavy load in the bed. And with the consumers always demanding a more fuel efficient truck, toyota has to take weight out of the truck were they can. So what you get is a very light weight bed, and stiff suspension = a bumpy freeway ride a certain speeds. And some freeways really exaggerate this trait, espeically in my area. Any free with the "washboard" texture is terrible without a load in the bed. But with weight back there it is very managable, I'm still able to keep a conversation on my cell with someone. This was strange to me because my last truck (a chevy) was not like this, but then again it could not take the weight in the bed like the Tundra can. So there is a trade off. Still I LOVE the truck, and would not trade it for anything.

That's not good news. What are you using for 100lbs of weight? Does it matter where it is?

It's good to know that it makes a difference, but still its not ideal.

I'm using it to tow, but this truck will also be my daily driver.
