Yah .....I'm really happy with the acceleration.....I can't imagine how happy I would be if I had the 5.7....I guess you could say I have 5.7 envy...From what I am reading the gas mileage is pretty close as well.....
I didn't buy this truck for gas mileage anyway..Thats what the Matrix is for.
Fortunately or unfortunately I am motivated by price and practicality. I still am impressed with the acceleration of my 2000 4.7. A new tundra with the 4.7 will save $900 plus some areas are offering another $500 to get the 4.7. I will never tow anything close to its max capacity. I also don't know what good a truck is that spins the wheels so much at max take off that you can't accurately gets its acclearation numbers.
Now, I would never say never on the 5.7, it has done one thing for the 07 tundra. Its sells them.
I guess the major diff (other than power) is the 4.7 is a proven engine. Though I decided to risk it and order up the 5.7, cause Im crazy like that. I also made the mistake of test driving the 5.7 and had to have it. Im still suprised they went with 381 hp, I was thinking they would come out with mabey 320.

I hope your not complaining I'm still waiting to get my insurance bill for the new truck, but I expect it to go up coming from a $20000 Tacoma with 159 HP to a $37100 Tundra with 381 HP
I, too, was hesitant since it was a newer engine, but Toyota has its shit together on engine performance and reliability (you can't count the camshaft failures, those were a supplier defect, not engine defect). Hell, they even put the damn thing in the Lexus LX's.

If I owned a 4.7 I would be hunting a trade very quik.
You obviously don't own a 4.7. My 2005 4x4, with the five-speed auto and 3.91 axles, and loaded up with a cab-over camper, goes up steep mountain grades at any speed I want.
If everyone was Class III towing, I maybe could see your point, but most of us don't tow heavy trailers.

You might be plesantly surprised. Insurance rates are often lower with a "full size" truck compared to a "compact" one. That has been my experience. It has to do with the fact that the typical Tacoma owner is a lot younger, so loss rates on that model are higher. Also, theft rates on Tacomas in some areas, such as San Diego, are very high.
